    Sorry Newbie here,
    How do you guys create the effect of the subject being brightly lit while the back ground being a darker tone?

    For my Photoshop Elements, it is under Filter-Render-Lighting Effects.

    the example in your link is done by software

    kinda like a vignette

    other ways is to under expose the bg while you correctly expose the subject
    this can be done via lighting or flash

    or make a huge gobo and put the bg in shade while exposing for the subject
