For the slug pic would prefer the coloured photo. For the b/w, the BG seems abit blown.

Life plant: the vertical white line in the BG spoils the pic, it is quite distracting.

That white line would be the pillar of the bldg behind it... Will try to note about the BG more in future.

As for the slug, I tried a few conversion methods and I thought this would have given it more punch, mebbe I was wrong.

I like the colored version more too. But then again, those are from 2 different photos right?

yup... The BnW one was about 2 seconds after the coloured one...

Actually, it can be from 8 - 9pm when I'm walking the dog or as late as 12 when I'm getting back home...

You mentioned night macros but your shots turned out good like those taken in the day.
Well control of the bg.
BTW I like the #2 . Like the small plant growing from the edge of the leave.
