How can you put in details when there isn't enough to make it into a 4Mb file from a small 500kb file??

You can work from an original file to boost the size using interpolation or mebbe vectoring, but with such a small file, it's almost impossible to do so.

you can simply interpolate small image file to a larger file, but will not add any details in it if there isn't any in the original images.

method: just enlarge 110% each time to get best quality till you reach the size you want. once you have it, do a UnSharpMask to sharpen it.
