Hi I am using a Canon DSLR. Is it necessary to have UV Filter? Some says it is to protect the lens while others tell me that it is not advisable to use UV filter on digital SLR as it will deteriorate the picture quality. Another question is, what is a ND fliter?

UV filter usage is totally up to you, not really needed with digital (compaired to film) mainly used for protection
ND is Neutral Density, mainly used to cut light, say you want to shoot at a really slow shutter speed (eg. 2 secs) but it is too bright, so you slap on a ND filter to cut light
