Generally, try not to blow out the highlights so that the details are captured and the moon picture can be post-processed with adjustments in the exposure and gamma in Photoshop CS2 "exposure".
There are some tiny greyish dots/artifacts (random noise) in the dark sky area in the original pictures and they're made to "vanish" when I increase the gamma of the picture. (i.e. darken the shadows as the histogram is shifted left wards so that the near-black noise pixels are darkened to blend into the dark sky). From my own experience, the picture is better and easier to post-process when use the 2x optical zoom than to shoot without optical zoom or in RAW. In addition, the moon looks more 3-D in the picture when it's not full. For a bight full moon in a clear sky, try to bracket around : 1/125-1/250-1/500 F/5.6 ISO 100. Below : 1/250, F/5.6, ISO 100 ![]() If the sky is not extremely clear or the moon is not that full or both, then expose more. Below : 1/125, F/5.6, ISO 100 ![]() Different white balances used below : Auto, Daylight and Fluorescent (which gives you a red cast since it assumes that the light is more green and therefore increase the red and reduces any blue/green). (For the pictures below, I didn't use the gamma adjustment and so there are some artifacts seen the the adjacent areas around the moon). Below : Auto WB ![]() Below : Daylight WB ![]() Below : Fluorescent WB ![]() (p.s. all the pictures above were taken handheld ..........since I can handhold as long as the shutter speed is faster than 1/actual focal length. At max. actual focal length, it's only 66.7mm and so I can hand hold if it's 1/125 or faster. 1/80 is sometimes a bit susceptible to handshake blur for me).
