Default next lens after EOS 18-55mm

Hi! I need some advice on which canon lens to buy next. My canon 400d came with EOS 18-55mm lens (standard kit) and i'm thinking of an upgrade. What would be a decent step-up from 18-55mm lens? I am more into taking pictures of landscape, portrait, nature. Any views? thanks!

The new EFS 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS this will complement your Kit lens incase a need for reach should happen.

What do you need? Faster lens? Shallower DOF? More reach?
If you don't need any of the above, just stick to the kit lens.

If you must get another lens, get the 50 f1.8. I learnt a lot from just using that lens.
And at $120, it's not going to burn a hole in your pocket.

Tamron 17-50mm will be good for landscape & portrait. Canon new 55-250mm IS is good for nature. Both are good and inexpensive lense......
