Default Old Sigma Super Wide II cannot be used on EOS400D?

Hi,

My uncle got a Sigma Super Wide II f2.8 24mm lens and i have an EOS400D. The lens can be mounted on the body and I can even auto focus with it. However when i click the shutter button to snap photo, an error message pop out which says "EF99 Please switch off and switch on".

I did a search in google, it says that I will need to send the lens to re-chip in order to get it work on my 400D body, if so, how much will the re-chip cost and does it worth that cost?

I'm still very new to photography, and kit lens is the only lens i have...
hope you can gimme advices.

Best to call up Sigma marketing to find out the cost. They might not even be able to rechip the lens if it's too old.

I was told by them (for another lens) that it'd cost about $150.

I AVOID Sigma lenses generally. I had 2 from 1995 or so and they could not work when I got my 300D and had to sell them off very cheaply ($50 each). They could NOT rechip.

If I had bought Canon lenses I would have LOST less money.

The least I expect from Sigma is to make sure rechipping is available even if the lens is from the 1990s....

At least you got the Err99. for mine Sigma 400mm, the camera (both the 400D and the EOS 5 film) will just power down with the mirror lock up. I have to take out the lens and switch off then on the camera again to get them back to norm. No more Sigma for me
