Default 18-55mm IS vs Sigma 17-70mm

Hi all. I've been using the 17-70 over the 350D kit lens and have generally been quite happy with it. But since I've bought a macro lens there is no need for the macro ability, and I'm keeping it solely for the (fantastic) range. I've always found it a tad on the heavy side (460g. yes, I find that heavy because I go out with a lot of other non-photography things), which in turn makes me reluctant to bring it out. I usually bring out the 50mm. While I don't mind a load during photo shoots a load is a put off when you just want to bring a dslr as a companion in your daily routines.

There are some great reviews of the 18-55mm IS, so I wonder if I should do a swap? Is this lens comparable to the 17-70 in terms of IQ? And then maybe get that and then a simple 28-105mm or similar?
