if you are not in need of specialized software. You can always check out hardwarezone or MacUsersGroup. They have 2nd hand items going for cheap prices. My friend is selling his 12" powerbook for 1K.

You might wish to check out DELL website. Their support is good.

Depends on what you need it for. I got a Compaq 14.1" lappy for $1300+ a couple of months back.

    for photo editing

you should be looking at a normal processor with core duo and 1 gb ram minimum

other than that, it doesn't matter 1.5k definitely within budget.. try looking at asus

    Get a Macbook Pro

The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year is a Mac. Try that again: The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac. Not a Dell, not a Toshiba, not even an Alienware. The $2419 (plus the price of a copy of Windows Vista, of course) MacBook Pro's PC WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 88 beats Gateway's E-265M by a single point, but the MacBook's score is far more impressive simply because Apple couldn't care less whether you run Windows

My Panasonic Toughbook is adorable and super light. 1.2kg, superb battery life, shock-resistant (somewhat), and very good support. What more can one ask for?

Ha! Thinkpads, Schminkpads! Jokes aside, if the X61 was being offered to me at the same price range, I will most likely get that instead of the Panasonic. The Panasonic called out to me at the MC2 store like it was fate, so I got that.

The US military can't be wrong. All their field laptops are ToughBooks housed in Pelican cases.
