    UPDATE: reading vs. LIVERPOOL!

    Reading vs. LIVERPOOL

    Madejski Stadium
    Saturday, 8 December
    Kick-off: 1715 GMT

    BIG-MATCH FACTS

Reading will have to break Liverpool's unbeaten record, if they are to achieve a first ever Premier League victory against one of the so called "big four".

Liverpool have won twice as many league games as the Royals this season (eight to four); Reading have lost nine more (nine to none).

Liverpool did the double over Reading in their first league meetings last season, and have already beaten them this season in the third round of the Carling Cup at the Madejski on 25 September, when Fernando Torres bagged a second-half hat-trick in a 2-4 victory.

    CLUB FORM

    READING

Highest achievable after Saturday's matches: 12th
    Lowest could fall: 15th

    1. Picked up one point from a last available 12, from a 1-1 home draw with Middlesbrough last time out, and won one of the last six Premier League matches; 2-1, home to Newcastle on 27 October.

    2. Completed six matches since their only clean sheet in their last 12 Premier League matches; 1-0, home to Derby on 7 October.

    3. Scored one goal in each of the last four league outings, and completed 10 Premier League matches since failing to score; the 0-3 home defeat to West Ham on 1 September.

    4. Looking for a hat-trick of home league victories over north-west clubs, having beaten Everton 1-0 on 18 August, and Wigan 2-1 on 22 September.

    5. Not scored earlier than the 29th minute, when Dave Kitson opened their account in the 2-1 home victory over Wigan on 22 September.

    6. Lost all eight Premier League matches in which their opponents have scored first, and the only club not to have picked up any points from a losing position.

    7. The second weakest defence in the highest league; 32 goals shipped, as opposed to Derby's 34. These are the only clubs to have shipped at least 30 Premier League goals.

    8. 11 points down year on year; had 25 points after 15 matches last season, when they were in the top six.

    9. Relying heavily on their home form so far this season; 13 of 14 points have been picked up at the Madejski.

    10. After this and before Christmas, a visit to Birmingham is scheduled and a home clash with Sunderland.

    LIVERPOOL

Highest achievable after Saturday's matches: 2nd
    Lowest could realistically fall: 5th

    1. Won the last five in all competitions, and hoping to add the scalp of Reading to those of Fulham, Newcastle and Bolton gained in their last three Premier League outings.

    2. Undefeated in eight league and cup matches, and not lost in 15 Premier League matches; won eight and drawn seven since losing 1-0, away to Fulham on 5 May.

    3. One of two remaining unbeaten clubs in the Premier League and one of two still to lose away from home at this level; the other club in both instances is Arsenal.

    4. Not conceded in four league games or in 370 minutes (six hours 10 minutes of Premier League football) since the Cesc Fabregas equaliser for Arsenal at Anfield on 28 October.

    5. Conceded six Premier League goals this season, at one every 210 minutes (three and a half hours exactly) on average. That's fewer than anyone else, but their nine clean sheets in this league is equalled by Manchester United and Chelsea.

    6. The current total of 30 points after 14 games is their best start for five years.

    7. Scored seven times in the last 10 minutes of Premier League matches; only Portsmouth can match that.

    8. The second best behaved club in the highest league; 17 cards - all yellow. Everton are the only club with fewer; 16 (two red, 14 yellow).

    9. The strongest club away from home in the Premier League having accrued 17 points from a possible 21; won five and drawn two on their league travels since losing 0-1 to Fulham in their last away match of last season on 5 May.

    10. The two pre-Christmas league fixtures are home to Manchester United and Portsmouth. A visit to Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup comes in between, and a trip to Marseille for their final group match in the Champions League precedes them, next Tuesday.

Benitez still determined to keep Mascherano

Rafael Benitez insists he will sign Javier Mascherano permanently despite growing speculation linking the on-loan midfielder with a move away from Liverpool.

The Reds boss is upbeat about the prospects of completing a 17million deal for the midfielder but is fully aware he has no control over a third-party's ownership of the Argentinian and any desire they might have to tout the player around Europe's richest clubs.

Mascherano, who caused West Ham so much trouble with his contract there, has a similar loan deal at Liverpool, the key difference being that the Anfield club's agreement is within the regulations the Hammers breached last term with near-catastrophic consequences.

But that means Mascherano is now being linked with Barcelona, Juventus and Manchester City, while Benitez's own attempts to buy the player were blocked by Liverpool's American owners in their well-publicised recent fall-out.

But Benitez remains confident the 23-year-old will eventually sign a permanent deal with the Reds.

He said: 'Clearly, I hope Mascherano stays here. We are talking now about this but I have confidence because he tells me he wants to stay.

'I am confident he can be persuaded to stay here. When I spoke to Javier, he told me he wants that, so I have confidence that we will sign him.

'He is playing well and everyone knows he is a good player and there are not too many world-class holding midfielders around.

'He wants to stay, our supporters like him and we will try to keep him.'

Benitez's renewed confidence could have sprung from what is a clear thawing of his relationship with Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

The fact the Spaniard watched his reserves win over Everton earlier in the week, with Gillett's son Foster by his side, underlines that normal service has resumed.

Foster was installed at Anfield to work alongside chief executive Rick Parry, and it would be inconceivable now to suggest discussions about January transfer targets are not ongoing.

Mascherano, rested for last weekend's 4-0 win over Bolton, is now set to play a key part in a critical week that will define Liverpool's season.

After Saturday's Barclays Premier League trip to Reading, Liverpool face a make-or-break Champions League tie in Marseille on Tuesday, where only a win will keep them in the competition.

The following Sunday, Manchester United visit Anfield, while a trip to Chelsea in the Carling Cup quarter-finals comes three days later.

Benitez will be boosted by the likely return from injury of four key stars for some or all of those four vital games.

Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger, Xabi Alonso and Fabio Aurelio are all back in training and are likely to be involved at some stage soon.

Benitez said: 'Jamie is fit after his rib injury and he can play at Reading. Alonso is training and is very close to a return. Agger is closer as well and Fabio could be back.'

And it seems Spanish striker Fernando Torres may well have played himself out of Benitez's rotation system, such has been his recent impact.

Torres can expect to start at Reading, where he scored a hat-trick in the Carling Cup earlier this season and it is unthinkable he would not lead the attack in Marseille.

Benitez is also highly unlikely to leave his in-form record signing on the bench against United.

Skipper Steven Gerrard has joined those hailing the 23-year-old, who has hit 11 goals in 17 games to help Liverpool to a 21-goal haul in five matches and an eight-game unbeaten run.

Gerrard said: 'Fernando is getting a lot of praise at the moment and rightly so because the way he has settled into English football has been amazing and the way he has played is frightening.

'It can be difficult for players from abroad to settle into English football but at the moment Fernando looks like he's been playing here for years.

'Everyone is talking about the goals he has scored and the way he has scored them but we should not lose sight of all the hard work he is putting in off the ball.

'He defends from the front and doesn't allow defenders to have a second on the ball. If they even think of dwelling on it, he is on to them straight away.

'He is always looking to help the midfielders and the defenders and that makes a big difference. I'm made up to have him in our team.'

the latest happening with the England job vacancy!

MOURINHO IN ENGLAND FOR FA TALKS

Jose Mourinho has reportedly travelled to London for talks with the FA over the vacant post of England job - with reports revealing that Fabio Capello has already met the governing body.

After two weeks of consultations, the search for Steve McClaren's successor has suddenly moved up a couple of gears.

After being named on Thursday as one of the five managers on Brian Barwick's short-list, The Guardian reports that Mourinho flew in by private jet to Farnborough airport in Hampshire yesterday. The Independent concurs, saying: 'Sources close to Mourinho claimed that the former Chelsea manager flew to England last night at Barwick's invitation - although this was also denied by others close to him who insisted that he was still in Portugal, in his home town of Setubal.'

It remains to be seen whether the FA's decision to make Fabio Capello the first candidate they interviewed was merely a matter of convenience or an indication of their preference.

'The 61-year-old held talks with the FA in Milan last Friday at which he outlined his plans for the job and who he would want as part of his staff,' reports The Independent.

'It is understood that, if offered the post, Capello would recruit Franco Baldini, his long-term right-hand man who has worked with him at all his clubs, as his assistant while there were also discussions about including Gianfranco Zola as part of his coaching team.

'Considering Zola, a former Chelsea striker, is partly to mitigate against the fact that Capello is still not fully confident in speaking English, and is concerned that this may count against him - although his grasp of the language is not as poor as has been portrayed.'

'The interview with Capello is not just a reward for the coach's formidable CV but also because he has been so enthusiastic - and diplomatic - in public about wanting the job. It did not go unnoticed at the FA, according to a source, that he reacted quickly to McClaren's sacking and also spoke in complimentary terms about the task of replacing him, describing coaching England as a "beautiful challenge".'

Reiterating earlier reports that Marcello Lippi, Martin O'Neill, Jurgen Klinsmann along with Mourinho and Capello are the five leading candidates, The Daily Telegraph reports that a FA board meeting has been scheduled for December 21. Although the FA would have to act quickly in order to unveil a new manager before Christmas, the paper warns that 'Barwick will be expected to deliver some form of update, perhaps even the identity of his chosen one' at the meeting.

Tantalising, it adds that 'Lippi's name is being increasingly mentioned around Soho Square'.

    ENGLAND GOSSIP

Jose Mourinho has flown into England for secret talks with the Football Association about succeeding sacked coach Steve McClaren. (Various)

But the FA's director of football development Trevor Brooking is at odds with chief executive Brian Barwick over the choice of coach. Brooking wants another Englishman - and wants to return to old club West Ham for Alan Curbishley. (Mail)

Marcello Lippi, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, is the surprise name on a short list of five for the England job, along with Mourinho, Fabio Capello, Jurgen Klinsmann and Martin O'Neill. (Mirror, Telegraph, Express)

Aston Villa manager O'Neill - who has publicly ruled himself out of the race - believes Mourinho would be "an excellent choice" to take over as England coach. (Times)

Jose's father Felix is, not surprisingly given that he is his dad, a big admirer and has given his "blessing" to him taking over as England coach. (Sun)

At the age of 28, Ricky is a nine-year pro. The two-time IBF Jr. Welterweight world champion, and former WBA super lightweight and welterweight world champion, he has beaten defending world champions in four of his last five fights.

In his most recent fight in June, 2007, he defended the IBO Jr. Welterweight World title with a devastating 4-round stoppage against former Lightweight World Champion Jose Luis Castillo.

On January 1, Ricky was recognized by the Queen of England in the annual New Year's honors list, and received the title MBE (Member of the British Empire). The ceremony took place at Buckingham Palace, and he will now be known as Ricky Hatton, MBE.

Ricky had a breakout year in 2005 - his accomplishments stood heads and shoulders above those of every other fighter in the world, and he was voted "Fighter of the Year' by The Boxing Writers Association of America, and The Ring.

From TheRing-online.com, December 21, 2005: The Ring is pleased to announce that it has selected Ricky Hatton as 2005's Fighter of the Year. Hatton is the first-ever British boxer to receive the award since its inception in 1928.

Hatton earned top honors by stopping long-reigning junior welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu at the end of the 11th round on June 4 in Manchester, England. In his second bout of the year on November 26, Hatton knocked out WBA Junior welterweight titleholder Carlos Maussa in the ninth round in Sheffield, England.

"Not only did Hatton take the title away from one of the greatest 140-pounders of all-time and make his first defense against a highly rated challenger, he did it in the sort of entertaining and definitive manner that attracts fans and fills venues," said The Ring's Editor-in-Chief Nigel Collins Hatton joins a long list of famous fighters to win The Ring's Fighter of the Year award, starting with then- heavyweight champion Gene Tunney, Other past recipients include Muhammad Au ('63, '72, '74, '75, '78), Joe Louis ('36, '38, '39, '41), Rocky Marciano ('52, '54, '55), Ray Robinson ('42, '51), and Mike Tyson ('86, '88).

Ricky has been the biggest draw in Great Britain for several years, with a huge, fanatical following in his hometown of Manchester.

Regarding his nickname, Ricky said, "I've always been a fan of Tommy Hearns, and everybody associates that that's where I got it from, but everybody's a Tommy Hearns fan. I got the nickname the first day I walked in the gym. I was 10 years old and put a pair of gloves on and started walloping the bag, and my amateur coach said, 'Look at him, look how evil he is. He's a little Hitman.'"
