Hallo,
The more I read, the more I get confused.. I was a film SLR user and switch to digital compact few years back to enjoy the digital photography technology.. have been getting use to the "portability" of using the small compact size.. Latest model is Canon Powershot S80.. but was frustrated with noise level and speed of compact digital.. Currently plan to switch to DSLR (Canon 400D) and "concerns" on the size and weight of DSLR.. friends highly recommend Fujifilm FinePix S8000 fd, a prosumer camera that claims to have SLR likes features and performance, especially I'm aiming for low noise and faster shooting speed.. But, the size of Fuji S8000 is not much smaller (111 x 78 x 79 mm) as compare to Canon 400D (127 x 94 x 65 mm).. ![]() I'm much much confuse now and hope any kind soul who experience in both DSLR and prosumer camera can give precious advise... Much thanks.. |

One is a Prosumer while the other is a dSLR.
They are different. If you want a true dSLR - go for 400D If you want a better camera but with compact digital roots, take the FinePix. |

"SLR-like" is never true in terms of AF and image quality. If you need a compact, get a real compact - say IXUS 860 IS, which is pretty fast. If you need the SLR feel - get a 400D, or Nikon D40, Pentax K10D etc...

May I suggest the Fujifilm S6500FD or even the Olympus SP-560 UZ?

Low noise is your target you say... the choice is very clear: DSLR is the way to go. The bigger the sensor the less the noise. You will be back to square one with a compact cam sensor... even if the 8000s sensor is better than most other compacts, it will not be as good as the 400D\'s at higher ISO (>ISO 400). And you want speed too... higher ISO capability allows you higher shutter speed marginal light conditions. Conclusion: dslr is more likely to meet your requirements than any compact. I have a Oly 550UZ and it is v v noisy compared to my 300D at ISO 200 and above...but it is still good for snapshots though.

for low noise and fast speed, canon 400D is definitely the way to go.
if price is a concern: may i suggest fuji S9600 instead of S8000. S9600 has a better sensor than S8000 (if i have not mistaken). do a search on the net and read up.

It really boils down to affordability of equipment vs affinity for phototaking.
Photography is not a cheap hobby despite that the cost of ownership has came down drastically due to digitalization of camera. Fuji camera is good to play with before you leap onto the DSLR wagon, and prepare to see significant investment onto the lens for years to come. You can start with a "cheap" DSLR like a second-hand olympus E330 or cannon EOS350 with low milage, so that you can play around for a while and get more in-depth know-how. In my humble opinion, it is more worth while to invest your hard earn $ in good lens that can be usually outlive many camera. Lens from reputable makers with good physical condition can still fetch a decent price after some usage, but that is not the case for camera / DSLR as well. Pls bear in mind that DSLR or Prosumer camera is just like your laptop, they degrade much faster than the traditional film camera. |

1. noise level lower 2. speed (focusing, zooming etc) faster 3. shutter lag lower 4. size is not much bigger than the prosumer digicam (like S8000 or S6000) don't be too "concern" about the size and weight of the 400D cos' it's made to be smaller than most dSLR and only slightly bigger than some prosumer digicams. |
