Default no photoing of Istana Gate???

I was stop by 2 policeman outside the Istana today, at 1805hr.

All I wanted was to take a photo of the xmass lighting hanging on the trees and the Istana Gate.

One of the policeman told me I cannot take photo of the Gate. I can only shoot in the opposite direction, ie shoot towards the road.

    1) We can take photo of the change of guard parade including the gate.
    2) We can even take photo of the garden and the exterial of buildings inside the Istana during open house on festive days.
    3) How can it cause security issues shooting the lightings and the gate with the usual guards? Cannot even see the garden, let alone the buildings.

what is "photoing"? what's "I was stop my 2 policeman"?

that aside, i believe none of us here at CS are qualified to answer your question. an email to the police in charge of security at istana would answer your question.

When they are unsure of the rules, you suffer. Better for him to stop den to get it from his superior if he make any mistakes. Weather you get your photos or not is not important to him. Same with security guards everywhere.

    than walk down towards orchard.

at 1830hr, I set up tripod start taking photo of the xmass decor outside the centre point with a compact camera, standing next to the road, out of the way of human traffic. than security uncle say cannot take photo without permission from the centre point management. he walkie talkie to his control centre to get his supervisor. than he ask me if I tan chiak one. I told him tan chiak one use much bigger camera than mine. than he ask my dont shoot there. anyway, I have gotten my shots, so just walk away.

    Today just not my day.

actually, where got rule saying no taking photo of the gate.

the policeman, if IQ not high enough to see my point (3), he should still be able to know the standard procedure from point (1) and (2). Unless he dont even know that. but the 2nd policeman standing beside should be aware lay.

maybe just my bad luck today I get 2 newbie standing guard there.

Sounds like 2day suay wan lah.

Even if U korreck, and argue too much with da police, they can always detain u, go station for 'friendly' questioning then everything ok, 3 or 4 hours later release u.

But it depends on how u speak with them lah. Ever I got stopped on roadside (practising panning) and oso dat dae ah, so hot so I oso productivity multi-task mah, i sun-tan while practise panning so become sun-tanning panning session. D police ask me wat I do I say i practise my hobby, den they check my IC ladio ladio here ladio der and meantime one officer ask me how come no wear shirt so I say hot mah. Den he lean closer a bit and speak softly say err...better to wear shirt wan den I ask is it against the law not to wear? But the way I say is not the tu lan way, but quite polite lah...den after awhile he keep quiet, I ask again, den he no choice say no such law, but the err...err...err but by dat time the other officer came back from his ladioing say ok, den dey 'advise' dun spend too long photoing d panning car wan so I say OK and smile den dey go away.

As for Centerpoint, if you're on the ROAD, then it's a public place and I think the security guards have no jurisdiction unless you're causing a possible traffic or crowd obstruction, unless it's the police, who can ask u to move outta way because you're on a road. If you're on the walk-way leading to Centerpoint, that area comes under the control of the landlord and the guards can stop you or ask you to leave.

If the guards wanna suan me on a public road, I would politely ask for the guard's name and supervisor's name, and then tell them if they dun leave me alone, I will call mata cos I kenar harassement fm d guards in a PUBLIC place. But sometimes hor, must cleber cleber wan a bit cos security guards d u kno lah...

p.s. From previous experience, I found that shooting on a weekday is less problamatic as year-end/festive period weekends are always 'high alert' periods for security guards etc mainly due to the very heavy human and motor traffic, and also shooting from much further away with a longer lens, or really up close with wide-angle and a monopod resting on a waist-pouch is much more effective.

Common la, i was stopped once by a MRT construction supervisor for talking shots of the MRT passing by jurong point and keep asking where i am from, i told him singapore and he keep asking, and in the end i show my I/C and even to the extent of my company punch card to show that i am a freaking engineer working in Singapore...

Then also once in Esplanade, kanna stop by security say cannot take the architecture stuff when i thought i see hundreds of "durian" shots in Flickr etc...

Another rather jialat one was when me and my friends did a overnight walkabout shoot in orchard to city hall. My friend took a shot of the construction signboards and kanna greeted with vulgarities from the construction supervisor who was smoking on the taxi stand where there are seats. My friend got into a fierce argument with him with all the f words flying around. Luckily didn't fight.

Well, guess it really depends on luck sometimes.

Here a lot of places not conducive for "informal" street photography, this angle cannot shoot, that angle cannot shoot. Ask why, they can't answer either, since orders are given from the top. And you have no way to ask them why too.

So you can LL do nothing, move on away from gahmen building areas to shoot. Once you near, alot of issues about sensitivity, privacy issues and lots of those terrorism related blahs.

so try to look like a tourist, if not, if you are female, people still close one eye. If you look like you haven't shaved in 2 days, and carrying a "pro-looking camera", and you attempt something they deemed suspicious (even though its not), u most likely be invited for some tea and research/brainstorm session with them. haaa

What is the point of having camera and not allow to take photos? Might as well ban sale of camera! Every thing cannot, singapore become a country which is too strict. Army cannot, nothing to argue but a normal street photo taking also cannot, what the heck! Time for some one to write in n get a firm answer so that we, most individual, can show to those bo liao security guard that we are ALLOW to take photos!!!!

Think those security like to bully individual. I think if a group took photos, they wouldn't be approached but if only a single, sure kenna. This is a unfair situation but what can we do? Bad Bad Security, just like a barking dog, useless!
    Only Sony device mostly, haha!

I was talking to a friend the other day and was whining (yes, WHINING) about having very little opportunities for street photography here.

After contemplating for a long time and exploring the different opportunities, I guess if there's little opportunities for street photography, I guess we'll have to concentrate on something else when in Singapore - Sky Sceneries!

At the very least, no one will tell u to stop shooting the clouds due to copyright issues or maybe the rainbow is protected property!

maybe they're scared that u'll take a picture with their face in it

Anyway talking about christmas light... seems like the best place to take the lights are in the middle of the road... anyone share the same sentiment as me... wonder if there's chance of the roads being blocked up... like when its "cheng gay"...
