Default Prevent shake on D80

Just found out that there is this shake reduce function. It hold the flip for 0,4 sec to reduce the shake. You can hear 2 flipping sound when you set it.

Anyone try before? Can I now shoot handheld for must faster speed too?

That's more for tripod mounted. It lets the mirror fully open before releasing the shutter. It's meant to reduce the blur caused by slapping motion of the mirror.

I don't understand "slapping motion of the mirror" also come in handheld, isn't it?

Yes, it does. Although mirror slap can cause motion blur, when handheld, the major contribution of motion blur is usually the instability of your hands.

Scaglietti is spot on. During handheld operation, you hands will contribute to almost all the vibration and "camera shake" during shooting. Some will say that even that little bit contributed by the mirror slap may affect a shot. All I say is that to each it's own, for me the 0.4s release lag means losing the shot all together. During tripod operation, the mirror slap is VERY significant IF you have a very tall tripod, or to top things off, you further increase tripod height via the centre column. I do astrophotography, so this mirror slap induced vibration is very evident in shots without the 0.4s mirror slap mitigating lag. Use wisely, and you'll be rewarded.

In SLRs, there is a mirror that diverts the image into the viewfinder and behind it is the shutter and film/sensor. When you press the shutter release, there are 2 things that happen almost simultaneosly. The mirror will swing up letting the image fall towards the film/sensor and the shutter will open. The movement of the mirror (slapping upwards) can cause small vibrations that can be picked up in the image as motion blur.

In the D80, there is a function to delay the shutter. It let the mirror fully swing up and stop there before activating the shutter. This will help to aviod the vibration caused by the mirror.

Its called mirror pre-fire if I remembered correctly. Works just like mirror lock up cept that you don't have a dedicated button for it and the mirror will only flip up before the shutter opens. With mirror lock up, you can flip the mirror whenever you want to.

Well with Mirror Lockup you can take your own sweet time to open the shutter

D80 does not have mirror lock up. (The mirror lock up the D80 menu is only for sensor cleaning.)

The function that TS mentioned is found in the menu item named as "Exposure Delay".

Yes. Can also turn to page 99 on the D80 Manual.
