Hi All, Anyone tried the Nikon AF 85mm f/1.4D IF? Thinking of getting this for Portraits. With f/1.4, it should be able to create a very good blur background? Any advice?

it is a good and sharp lens. Great for portrait with proper use, if just for the bokeh, there is the 200/2

Vice versa, you can try the 105mm f2 DC. Another great portrait lens. This is a defocus control lens, so you can control the amount of blur you want in the foreground or the background. What's more, it is cheaper and rarer than the 85 f1.4 AF-D IF. |

Make sure ur cam calibrate to solve back or front focusing problem... I using D200 with 85 f1.4 not sharp due to "back focusing problem" and send to nikon service center about 10 days ago, let you know the results if getting better...Unless u using D300 self calibrate (Fine-tuning) .....

mm... I had the 85mm f1.4 and the defocused background has some fringing issues.
http://forums.clubsnap.com/showthread.php?t=239790 Personally I was thinking if I have to stop down to f2 or f2.8, maybe the 85mm f1.8 is better value. I dunno though cuz I never used the f1.8. |

personally, id go for the 85 f/1.8. btw the MTF resolution is pretty much better than the 85 f/1.4 and the bokeh is decent. besides, theres less of a PF issue on this lens, and distortion is 5 times less (though both figures are negligible) a friend of mine also tried this lens out - build quality wasnt surprising, according to him |

The 85 is good but at wide open sure to have some flare.
I considered between portrait with bokeh + low light VS portrait with some bokeh, great colours and sharpness + handholding in low light and arrived at the 105F2.8 VR Macro. I lose the F1.4 bokeh but got the handholding and best of all the silent focusing and nano crystal coating. I still kept my 85f1.8 to use when needed ![]() |

The 85 1.4 is a simply stunning lens to use. One of the best out there for portraits.

The lens really surprised me when I tried it out at super import nights. I know it was good, but didn't expect it to be great. Exposure, contrast, colors, skin tone are simply spot on for portrait. Am amazed I didn't need to do any PS the end result. If you have the moo and portrait is your game, invest in one.
