Default Framing shift when VR is on

I have just acquired my 18-200mm VR recently. However, each time when VR is in operation, there is a noticeable shift in the framing when you look through the viewfinder. I have been using my 55-200mm vr before this and there is no shift in the frame/plane so I am wondering whether is that normal?

It is more obvious with "active" mode compare to "normal" VR mode. Sometimes you won't feel the shift at normal mode but when you half press in active mode, you can see the slight jerk of the frame and it is shifted by a bit. at the end , I have to re-frame my subject to get what I want.

TIA for your help.

you mount on the tripod or handheld?

and i guess its quite a big shift as you need to reframe the subject.

most impt, is the end result sharp or blur?

Did you turn off your camera before the VR cuts off previously? I think there might be a problem with the centering. You might need to bring it in to NSC for a check if it happens very often. There is going to be a slight shift if you're moving your camera but if you keep still the initial shift should not be too noticeable.

After each shot, you must feel the VR cut off before switching off the camera.

If you just bought the lens, maybe you might want to try another copy in the shop and get it changed if possible.

Hey guys, thanks for the response, appreciate it.

It is not mounted on the tripod, I handheld it and there is no problem with sharpness. Basically I am holding the camera/lens in stationary position and the moment I trigger the VR mechanism, the frame shifted. It is not really about whole subject being shifted out of frame, but rather the position has re-aligned and since I am doing landscape, I would have to re-frame my subject.

lsisaxon, I did not turn off my camera before VR cuts off, I know we are not supposed to do that and it is the initial shift when VR is triggered. Perhaps I should bring the lens to NSC for a check.

Any updates on your lens situation?
My 18-200VR lens seems to also have this problem.

Yes there's a little "shift" so to speak, the moment VR is activated / deactivated on my 70-200, i notice the same when i try canon IS lenses, so it's probably normal.

Anyway for landscapes, wouldn't u be shooting on a tripod with a small aperture? in that case, VR should be off.

IMO, it is better that you see the shift real time as opposed to in-body image stabilisation which you do not see the effect in the viewfinder and the image might shift at the time of shutter release.
