Default What is the lowest shutter speed you can handheld without using VR? - 2nd Edition

My apology to Chngpe01 (moderator) for OTing too much in my previous thread.

Ok.... Let get back to our topic:

What is the lowest shutter speed you can handheld without using VR?

For me it is 1/4 sec with a Nikon 80-200 f2.8 AFD at 200mm end. The images came out tack sharp.

Wow! 1/4 sec -- when you say handheld, was someone holding your hand?

Photos with exif intact to justify will be good.
Maybe also can state whether 1 shot 1 kill or using continuous fps for random hit.

At 200mm, I am only willing to go 1/10s with VR II on. Else, it's strictly at least 1/160s, although I'd prefer other means (increasing ISO, shooting at 135mm and cropping) to circumvent this problem.

1/4s at 200mm is incredible.

In my previous thread, one fellow CSer can handheld at 200mm for 1 full second and the images still tack sharp!

My 1/4 secs is nothing.

Naww not tack sharp I think. Usable I'm sure, but maybe not perfectly tack sharp. Maybe our dear commando photojournalist can comment.

Just curious: If you can really do 1/4 sec at 200mm w/o VR, am I right to think that you can also get tack sharp results at 2 full seconds handheld WITH VR? (Since Nikon claims 3-4 stops VR advantage). Wonder if you've tried that...

When it's down to 1/4" sometimes with VR it's worse because the VR reacts to the mirror slap and you try to correct and the VR try to correct and it makes things worse. At 1/4s on D70s, with or without VR not much difference for me, 1/15" and higher, it's a difference between sharp and tack sharp but for my wife, it's the difference between blur and sharp. So I'd have to admit that VR works!

If you don't have anything really productive to say, don't. You made the choice to read this thread and you made the choice to hit the reply button and say something unproductive, when you could have easily just left the thread.

Nonetheless, I am certain that there are some of us (or at least myself!) who are interested in seeing this feat.

Perhaps you can upload a couple of shots to showcase this talent?

Same. I tried yesterday at 200mm. Steadiest was around 1/30 or 1/25 only. Can't go any slower.

I was forced to shoot at 300mm f/4 1/60 with no support for an indoor event before. Hit and miss affair.

and even a picture with exif data cant proof anything as the person can always mount the camera on tripod when taking.

Here is your proof. A quick test shot off my bedroom window.

80-200mm focused at 200m, handheld at 1/8 sec (had my first cup of coffee this morning therefore I cannot go lower than 1/8 sec without blurring). My right shoulder leaning against the wall. Shot at ISO 100.

My king size bed is right next to the window. There is no way I can balance my two feet on a floor space that is less than 80 cm X 30 cm without leaning myself against the wall. Behind me is my bedside table with a reading lamp on it. In short, I was shooting in an awkward position.

To the moderator..... Sorry for me OTing again. Please don't close this thread.
