Why 18-55...? I thought a 18-70VR or 18-135VR would be more sensible.

Lens construction 11 elements in 8 groups (with one aspherical lens element)
vs old Optical construction 7 elements in 5 groups inc. 1 ED and 1 aspherical glass element "To deliver superior optical performance, Nikon set even stricter engineering standards for this new lens, and has achieved greater overall resolution." i cant wait to see how it looks! hopefully better manual foc than the plasticky feel

Does the front thread still rotates like the non-VR version?

Hmmm... I wonder will this be sold unbundled with a SLR. I don't think you could get the 18-55mm non-VR version brand new without buying a SLR body.
I'd get one if it's sold brand new for around $200. |

I think it is released specifically as a competitor to Canon's new 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, that is bundled with the 40D as one of the kit options.

Construction looks better than the non VR version (look closely at Dpreview picture's plastic parts)
Mount seems to be plastic This is not an IF lens, looks like it will rotate during focusing Why VR not red colour? is a new D40 sucessor on the way? ![]() |

I've read from somewhere in the forum that the VR on 55-200mm belongs to first generation. Can this 18-55mm using the first generation too? What visible difference does it make anyway?

Actually do you need VR in this range...???
![]() Just pushing up the ISO will be more than sufficient. If it cost more than $600, it will be better to consider the Tamron 17-50mm. At least you get f2.8. |

If I can handhold 200mm at 1 sec (1/8 sec if I tired), I wonder how many sec I can handhold 18mm with VR (okok... mirror slap and fatigue will ruin anything past 1 sec anyway)Guess this lens will allow people to take night shots at 18mm without tripod? (Never try before with my 18-200, so cannot comment) |
