Default Lightning Storm

Taken during a recent trip to Perth. I initially wanted to shoot Perth night time skyline from a high vantage point. Unfortunately (or fortunately), the weather took a turn for the worse, threatening to rain with lots of lightning and thunder. I realised that all the lightning seem to strike around a particular area and decide to try my luck. Mounted my camera with my Nikkor 50mm/f1.4 pointed at the general direction where all the lightning seems to be occuring, set to manual mode, F/22, 30s and fire away at every 30s interval. This is best shot after 15 mins or so of shooting.

Mind sharing how you decided on F22 at 30s? Did you do any bracketing?

A longer exposure time would increase my chances of getting some lightning bolts in my exposure. 30s is the longest exposure for my camera (other than bulb mode of course). It's pretty much like "fishing" for lightning bolts, I open my shutter for as long as possible to search for lightning bolts. Since I have such a long exposure, a small aperture would prevent the photo being over exposed, the greater depth of field also helps. In this photo, 3 lightning bolts occur within split seconds of one another to create the final picture.

Excellent shot, EastGear!

Well, I guess that would REALLY charge up all your batteries...
