Hi all im thinking of getting my 1st DSLR and im looking at the 400d because of budget..
With the kit 1 (18-55mm) and additional lens (85-300mm) Total cost about $1700 Is it worth the buy? or should i get the body only and get other lens? Please help me as im completely lost.. Most likely shooting at landscape(travelling), portraits, wedding and macro on flowers, insects and birds.. |

Hmm. Why not get the 400D kit with 18-55 first, try out a few tele lens (100mm macro, 70-200 f/2.8L|f/4L, 75-300 IS USM etc etc) before getting your second lens?

But i wonder how much different (in terms of quality) the photos will turn out if i use the kit lens to take portraits and landscape? |

If lighting conditions are good, the quality produced by the kit lens can be quite satisfactory. Especially landscape. For portraiture, i would advise another lens for stronger bokeh and better sharpness. The cannot-go-wrong suggestion is a 50mm f/1.8, about 130 dollars for a brand new copy.

1) 50mm f/1.8 2) EF 18-55mm (kit lens) 3) EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Last edited by gubble80; 19th November 2007 at 12:09 AM. |

I suggest not getting too much at one go. Seriously, just get the kit lens first, and the 50mm f/1.8 for low light situations. The tele can come later.
You probably will never be able to get macro of birds, unless the bird is dead. ![]() |

like others suggests, tele can wait... unless you shoot birds most of the time.
the kit lens produces decent results imo. |

Get 17 -55mm F2.8 Tamron. Abt 650. A really gd lens that is of slightly lesser quality than the Canon 17-55 2.8. Then get a 50 1.8.
Have both 400d and 40D. The biggest gripe of 400D is the small body. U need the vertical grip to balance the lens or else hands very tired. |

It is an inferior lens in most situations. If you are seriously considering photography, do consider the 70-200L f/4 USM (IS/Non-IS) instead of this lens. Do not get distracted by its focal length. |

To be honest with you, if you don't know the applications for a lens, then you shouldn't be jumping the gun and purchasing it. |
