Just wanting to check if anyone here uses this instead of the USB / Firewire versions.
As I cannot seem to find the copying speed for the PCMCIA card slot versus USB and Firewire. Just a show of hands if anyone of you guys here uses SanDisk card readers and any feedback? The reason why I am asking is because I travel a fair bit and was contemplating of using the PC Card Adaptor. If I have my laptop around to transfer my files since it is one cable less to bring / forget and the card adaptor fits nicely into the card slot. Verus using say the firewire or USB external ones. Pricing wise? Understand that Vector Magnetics at Funan are the Authorised Distributor in SGP. Are they still there? Sorry for asking this many questions but am in KL and gosh, I can't even find this card adaptor but the USB and firewire readers are available here. |

I was looking for decent and small CF card reader too. Bought Sandisk Extreme USB Card reader. It is not as big as what i thought of. Very fast too. Much faster than normal card readers that i ever used.
I think PCMCIA readers are ex. Not too sure. I have seen one at Sim Lim before. Can't remember which shop.

Yeah I called up my regular photo equipment supplier yesterday to check but he told me today that I was unable to get the Extreme Firewire card reader now as it is out of stock. Was considering the USB version but Firewire has mor than double the transfer speed. Did a quick check for the PCMCIA readers, it is listed as SGD$30 before GST for the Sandisk Ultra CF card adaptor. From my supplier, he mentioned that using the PCMCIA slot, transfer rates are slower than the USB/Firewire. I guess in the end, I will be getting two 1) For home use. 2) PCMCIA when I need to travel. |

ivan, yes PCMCIA readers are painfully slow...i tried before. i might have a friend who doesnt mind selling his off cheap. i'll go check and let you know.
for travelling i usually have 2 card readers, and i only use those with detachable cables (mini-usb to USB). so if anything goes wrong, i can still download photos direct through the camera. nothing worse than being stuck with a 4GB card on a 14-day trip! |

The last quote I had was SGD$115 from TK Photos.
The PC card adaptor is SGD$30 with GST. SanDisk distributor. Was thinking using the PC Card adaptor as primary on tight trips where weight is an issue. Firewire for home USB cable to camera directly as backup. The cable is camera specific and what my E-1 uses is different from my E-500. |
