M = manual. Use only if you know what you are doing.

Tv = You set shutter speed. Use when you want to shoot at specific shutter speed.

Av = You set aperture. Use when you want to shoot at specific aperture.

All of these can also be used with flash. But effect may be different, of course.

M is the mode of choice for me as it gives me full control of the shot. However, I still use AV and TV when I'm too lazy to adjust the settings. But this rarely happens because I don't like the settings the camera throws back sometimes.

With regards to when to use which setting, there is no real hard and fast rule. It varies from individual to individual. My advice to you would be to experiment with the various conditions and decide from there which mode suits you best for the situation

It depends on what you intend to achieve. I shoot mainly in A (Av) mode as I want to control the DOF of the shots or to get a good sharp pic (some lenses needs to be stopped down more to get good sharpness)

And I use S (Tv) mode when I require high fixed shutter speeds.

M mode is for times when I am after a certain mode or effect in the picture and mostly when I am spot metering a certain area.

You're free to explore the different functions of your camera, but as a general rule,
    1. M - Use it to explore the different effects between aperture and speed.
    2. A - Use it more for portraits, for depth of field.
    3. S - Use it more for action/moving subjects, to freeze or show fluidity and movement.
    4. P - Use it when you're feeling lazy!
    from guitars, cars to dslr...

    Not true.

M = Manual, use it when you want to control everything.
A=Aperture priority. Use it when you want to control aperture. Not just for portraits.
T= Shutter priority. Ditto for shutter speed control. Not just for sports/fast subjects.
P=Program. Use it when you trust the camera, or when you don't know what to use.

    i almost use A exclusively.

    1) control DOF (look out shutter speed too low to safely handhold).

    2) control shutter speed through aperture choice (eg, if i need slow shutter, i just stop down).

if cant get the combination i wan, might ve to resort to adjusting the ISO.
