hello all.
i've recently purchased a canon 400d with the above-mentioned lens as part of a secondhand sale. this is my first dslr ever and i actually mistook the lens for the f/3.5-4.5 version. i've been reading reviews and i feel rather bummed that i made such an error. i was wondering if anyone could advice me on what to do from here. should i sell the lens and probably get the f/3.5-4.5 one as my primary zoom lens for day-to-day use? or should i just stick with what i have for now. if i were to sell, how much would such a lens go for? i plan to purchase the canon 50mm f/1.8 in the near future as my first prime lens. i was also wondering, should i just use this 50mm for everyday use and forsake the use of a zoom lens? do advice. thanks! |

Keep the lens. Use it first. the correct question should be what do u intend to shoot? if u dun require wide angle at all, dun get a zoom then but do remember that 50mm on a 400d tend to be a bit long |

hmm. i see. actually, i intend to shoot performances which are normally under low-light conditions. but of course, would also be good to have a lens for general use.

well people usually tell you to keep it and use it until your skill level improves.
i'll give you the flip side: sell it. It should fetch $100~. get a decent lens to start with, notably the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. it's a sizeable investment, but worth it nonetheless. for shooting indoor, get a 50mm f/1.8 for $90 2nd hand. |

and thanks for the advice. 50mm on a 400d would effectively be around 75mm right..? correct me if i'm wrong :\ |

17-50 Tamron should be around 650 new, or 500-550 used. Alternatively Tamron 28-75 is the equivalent of the lens which can be use for full frame in future. If you don't shoot wide often, the 28-75 give you a longer reach for your stage shooting. Should be about $100 cheaper then the 17-50. I live with the 28-75 as my general lens for years already, and love the sharpness & bokeh. Only downside is the AF which is slower then Canon USM.

i wanted to buy that package too but realise it wasnt the EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM. (how much this cost? ) I'm also like you, getting 400d. And not sure what lens to get, do view my thread as i've already posted one on what lens to get.
what do you people mean by wide? and if i have a budget of 300-500 for a lens. any good recommendations?

Saw a 28-135mm F4-5.6 IS USM starting at $500 in the market place. I have one and it is a good useable lens for capturing stage events.

it all depends on what you want to shoot really. though the 28-105 you got is not as good as a 3.5-4.5 copy, it still works as a general purpose lens. if you really want a general purpose lens that gives a good zoom and covers both wide angle and tele, you can consider getting a 17-85 IS USM. my advice? hang on to it first.

haha
ef-s 17-85mm isnt good for indoor performance shooting... usually flash is not allowed. plus when u zoom to 85mm, aperture will be f/5.6. if u on budget, i would suggest u keeping ur present lens and a prime for indoor performances =)
