Question Looking for lenses

Hi there,

I am planning to get a DSLR soon (most prob EOS 10D) and am looking ard for some lenses first. What would be the recommended lenses to get first? My friends have recommended me a 28-105 (wide-angle) and 100-300 (telephoto) for starters. What I would also like to know is which F size I should get.

In terms of the lens brand do I need to get a Canon lens or a 3rd party lens would do? If so, what 3rd party lens would be recommended? I know that the main diff bet a canon lens and a non-canon lens is that the canon lenses are equipped with a USM. Is that all the difference or are there any more significant differences?

Please help. Thank you.

You sound new to SLR photography or photography itself... I think it's better to know what you're going to shoot first, your interests b4 deciding what to buy. It'll be good if you can tag along someone who goes out shooting or better still, have someone lend u an SLR camera to handle to have a feel of the different focal lengths of lenses instead of jumping in too soon to buy based on what you "hear".

Firstly, 28-105 is a standard zoom, it isn't a wide angle by any standard at all.

28-105 on the 10D will end up as a standard->short tele zoom. The resultant combo would be 1 short tele zoom and 1 long telezoom and no wide angle.

Perhaps you may want to try borrowing your friends camera and lens for a trial to get a better idea of what you want.

yes....using DSLR and P&S digicam are very different

also, better do enough homework before you are getting any lenses, especially when you are buying new one

To what time .. it really hard to say. To be safe, try not to come down after 8pm. Even tho there might still be people there.

If you can come for SEED on 21st May, you can look for me. I'll be willing to let you try out 24-85mm USM on my D30, which I feel is a better buy than the 28-105mm on a DSLR.
