Default I need a 50mm - Please advise... Thanks

I am beginning to get rather 'pissed' with my 50/f1.8 becoming a 80mm... :'(

Any DSLR expert has a solution to this...?? Thanks

A 35mm f/2 will give you close enough to 50mm f/1.8. (56mm f/2, 6mm longer, one third stop slower, but should be good enough).

35mm * 1.6 = 56mm
28mm * 1.6 = 45mm

Your choices:-
Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens ~ 45mm f/1.8
Wide Angle EF 28mm f/2.8 Autofocus Lens ~ 45mm f/1.8
Wide Angle EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Autofocus Lens ~ 56mm f/1.4
Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens ~ 56mm f/2.0

Rough pricing:-
Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens US$399.95 ~ S$700
Wide Angle EF 28mm f/2.8 Autofocus Lens US$164.95 ~ S$290
Wide Angle EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Autofocus Lens US$1,099.95 ~ S$1,925
Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens US$229.95 ~ S$400

Why do you must get a 50mm view on DSLR?

The reason why 50mm is so popular is becos of it relatively cheaper price and sharp image.

Getting a 35mm/2 so that it appeared to be 50mm on DSLR is insane. The price different is 2X more.

If u really wanted a "50mm" view. Just step back a bit and you will get "normal eyes view".

I really don't fancy carry additional gears, bag or heavy lens... A 50mm view on DSLR is pretty much my requirement - lightweight and normal eye view. And I love the 50mm on my EOS 30 then, 'cause of it fast f/stop... Should I mount a standard zoom, f/stop is 3.5... rather slow, and with f/stop 1.8 and 50mm view, I am able to shoot even indoor without much problem... at higher ISO...

Maybe someone has a better solution to my 'abnormal' problem... Thanks...

Maybe you should have gotten a 1Ds then
But if you would only consider 'solutions' that would allow you to continue using the 50mm lens and make it give you a 50mm view instead of a 80mm view, then I think the only viable solution is as what binbeto suggested - compose the picture mentally, step back a bit to get the required 50mm view and take the picture.
And it does not even cost you a single cent !

Using a 50/1.8 on a DLSR is still light weight and fast. For the different in "50mm" and "80mm" view. There is not much of a different actually.

You can get the 35mm as some suggested.

In fact, some website/book I read say that 85mm is closer to wat our human eyes "see" the world as we will concentrate on an object and disregard thing in the corner.
Not too sure how accurate this is.

Thanks... I wish I can use that method... most of the time, there is a space issue, where I can't take another step back... Meanwhile till I find a solution, I am still living with the 28 degree instead of the 46 degree...

Actually, I don't understand what exact solution u're looking for. The prob as I see it is a very straightforward one. Your DSLR has 1.6x. You want 50mm focal length and a fast lens. The closest and most practical way you can get is to fit it with a 35mm lens f/2 as other posters have mentioned.

Moving back physically and all that has nothing to do with changing the focal length.

Neither will your DSLR's 1.6x disappear like magic overnight... ermm, is that what u wish for when u said "till u find a solution..."???

Hi Ivor, sounds like you'll have to stick with your 50mm 1.8 and take a few shots of the scene (in mosaic style), then stitch them up in Photoshop.
