Default Look-alike

Probably one out of the many thousands of frames for these primates a while ago. Their behavior simply fascinates me. For a good reason- we are more alike than we are different.

Perhaps it's those eyes

Very sharp and emotive... Interesting. Feel happy looking at them.

But, at the same time, also very forgetable... feels like so many of the Nat Geog kind. Well that could be a compliment too. haha Still, nice shots!

I think cuz I'm an animal lover, and it makes me happy to see them looking so contented. Of course, this is merely projecting human understanding of facial expressions onto animals, could be wrong.

where did you take them? zoo?

story of two camels:

one day a baby camel asks its mother "why does camels have humps"
>> We use them to store water in the desert

"why do we have long eye lashes"
>> to protect our eyes from sand storm

Finally the little camel asks
"mummy then why the hell are we doing in the zoo?"

no single creature will can be happy to be kept behind 4 walls, no matter how much food u provide them with. hav u seen a panther pacing restlessly behind bars?

i agree...animals can be seen pacing around enclosures even in a world class zoo like spore zoo..pacing is a sign of distress and its an abnormal behavior for animals. though the animals are well taken care of, they can never feel as happy as those in the wild. its the same feeling as being lock up at home with good care and food, but you will always be wondering what's out there over the window.after being a regular visitor to the zoo, i have come to find out that its not as exciting and thrilling to see an animal in the zoo than in the wild..in the wild, even a mousedeer would have captured my attention. nice pics btw jeff

Understand though I've not really seen an animal in the wild before...

Maybe next time when I have the chance to make such a comparison, then I'll understand

Totally Agreed! I just went to the zoo recently, and I thought i was in hell. I can say that 80% of the animals in zoo are emotionally upset, it's like all of them went crazy and the moment see into their eyes, I feel an total emptyness

Case #1 - white tiger walking from left to right and right to left for at least a 100 times for what i'm able to count.

Case #2 - Wolf walking in circle around its boundary none stop from 0900hrs (the moment i reached) till 1700hrs (till i left)

And there are so many other examples which I can't remember right now! Not to mention the poor polar bears living in a giant fish tank!

Its time we question ourselves whether there is a need to keep wild animals in Zoos just for the sake of educating the mass? knowledge of wildlife can be learn thru books! And i'm not targetting the zoo in singapore alone...

I was thinking of doing wildlife photography and is already on the way to invest in my first bazooka. But this recent trip to zoo really change my total image of true wildlife! But nevertheless, I might be shooting in africa sometime in the future like what starrynite did, shooting true wildlife.

Happy shooting!

Before this gets out of hand, let me stress that sometimes for the good of the bigger picture, we need to make some sacrifices.

In an ideal world, no animals will be caged for display and entertainment. In an ideal world, the natural habitats of these animals will be undefiled by man. I have friends who would jump on the activist's bandwagon and condemn the idea of captivity of animals, but they do not see the irony when they still consume sharks' fin soup or waste paper, water and energy at the office and their daily lives.

Animals in the S'pore Zoo are either obtained from exchange with other zoos or bred locally. They can't be considered wild per se, I agree that to a certain extend that they still have their wild instincts, but it is romantic to think they can survive for long once released in the wild. Put a white tiger in the wild, it wouldnt last for long as its prey can see it from miles away.

Still, I cannot deny that quite a number of the zoo animals display stress patterns which does make my heart ache.

I have no vested interest with the Zoo, but I have on occassions volunteered with it to educate visitors on nature conservation. For an average vistor who is a non-nature fanatic, the experience of actually seeing and (sometimes) feeling the exhibits beats even the most well put together nature books.

Why the need for captive animals then? Comercialism aside, the idealist in me would say that it is for the sake of the wild ones still outside.

Back to the images, well use of light.

Followin on with the discussion, let's call the caged friends the ambassadors of those who roam freely. Education is still an essential that we want for the long term good.

I consider the Zoo a necessary evil, provided it is well run. I am glad this thread is running back on track.

Love the 1st image well done Jeff

I don't think you have OT, in fact you have put across your points very well and I agree and appreciate them too. I feel that what is important is for us, photographers, is to create images that can bring out the message of the beauty of nature, its rights to this earth and conservation. And this is what I hope that we in this forum in Clubsnap can do our little part for nature.

Again well done Jeff. Thanks for posting and also giving members here to have good discussion too.

its nice and makes me have few good look at them though.

on the contrary, i do felt that they don't look happy at all but rather bother.
indeed it is a good shot and i quite like it.
