Default A birthday gift for my mother.

My mother's birthday is coming up this friday and this is the first time I have bought an expensive present for her. Since I know a little about studio photography, I decided to try it out on the present I bought for her. I do not really know much about studio shoot as I learnt from a friend, who was self-taught. It was difficult as the 'setting' was on my study table with a piece of black cloth. It was a low budget set up as I do not have the money to buy any materials or such as I am still a student. C&C welcomed. I would like to know which part you do not like about the picture and which part you like about the picture [if any]. I need to learn more

Maybe can spread the chains out alittle. So viewers can tell if it is a bracelet or something else.

It is very nice of you to buy your mom a birthday gift with the best you can afford. I'm sure she appreciates it. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAMA!

haha nice daughter. =)

but on the picture side, i think lighting abit too flat. and a larger view of the bracelet would be better, i feel. =)

Thanks for the comments Well, I only had one slave flash ): I wanted to spread the chain out but the cloth was too small. This picture is cropped by the way, because I used a f1.4, which means having a minimum focusing distance of 45cm. The original picture makes the bracelet seems really small. Luckily the megapixels compensated. I tried my best to bring out the engraving but it was difficult as it would be reflected at any angles. For this shot, I did not use command mode but I shot at a 4" f11 @ ISO100 with my sb800 manually flashed. Means i pressed the flash button a few times :/ I tried using command mode but then out of 16 of them, non of them produced this good. Hopefully someone would teach me more about jewellery photography (:

Don't know about you, but since its a small item, I do think it will easier to control lighting using lamps rather than flash? Its easier to control the shadows, and the amount of contrast on the details using lamps at least in what I've tried.

Usually 2 table lamps with some inventive light diffusing using simple A4 printer paper will do the trick. Give it a try, a less frustrating compared to flash, which I do think is more applicable if objects are large or that you cannot get the right amount of contrast using lamps.

I only have one lamp. Anyway, is it ok if I post another picture here? Same object but different lighting.

not bad for a product pic
get closer and tilt the bracelet higher
spread out the chains too.
1 lamp possible to work with, just got to do more adjustment to avoid refelctions.

Oh.. it isn't bad la, just need a little more contrast in the details, which I thought the lighting would need adjustment to achieve. Have fun!

I would like to see more of the words engraved... Either a tighter crop but that decreases the quality, or u can try using a close up filter. I am using a +4 Close Up and it decreases the focusing distance to 20cm. That'll make the bracelet bigger and the engravings clearer. 2 table lamps each on 1 side should give enough lighting.

Ok thanks everyone for their advices. I will try those tips out next time. Meanwhile, i have just finished my set of sunflower pictures. Is it true we cannot post more than one picture per week in critiques?

think composition wise, personally i would prefer taking the picture at an angle showing some depth as well as a tighter crop. maybe can try using CPL filter to try cuttin down the glare/ reflection for more contrast on the wording...

i think for jewellery, must show a 3D view, not sure though. Yeah flash is dificult as no matter what output is fired, the jewellery would reflect it away and it would be dark.

i am confused too
