Interesting new lens (Voigtlander Ultron 40mm F2 SLII Aspherical @ http://www.cosina.co.jp/seihin/voigt...sl2/index.html) by Cosina. It seems more
"Pancake" than the earlier version. I would be interested to get this lens when it arrives in Singapore though I already have the Zeiss ZF 35mm f/2. Mainly because this new Voigtlander 40mm lens is "Pancake" lens. |

In picture it looked a little like the older SL lens, which I use a lot and is my primary lens for travel now. The Nikon 45mm is more pancake-y than the Ultron, but its thin enough. I guess the only difference I can see is the inclusion of a metering chip. Makes no difference on a D2 or D200 on the nikon, but on lower range cameras it does help not to guess the exposure.
My eyes are more on the 58mm f1.4 Nokton announced at the same time. I've been looking for a Topcor version for some time now, and the only shop I've seen this lens in wanted to charge 2.5x what the market price was a year or two ago. The Nokton looks like the same optical design with a different name. |

I cant find any Nikon 45mm pancake in the market with acceptable price. This Voigtlander Ultron 40mm F2 SLII Aspherical lens is a good replacement for my intend to purchase Nikon 45mm pancake! My friend has the older Ultron and therefore I can also borrow from him.

Looks like you're an alternative brand guy too!
The ULTRON is ideal for most cases except the aspherical design seems to cause a double image in the boke area in the background. I'm not too bothered by it though. With a pancake lens, I can fit my camera with the lens into a Nikon tote bag (http://www.nikon-image.com/jpn/produ.../120307018.htm) so that it doesn't look like a fat camera bag when I travel. |

Looking at the design, the SL 40 II seems to be of the exact copy of the original SL 40.
However, the new lens is smaller and lighter than the original. |

wah D40 with 40mm, super light
but the viewfinder need to be bigger might be difficult to focus on the D40. D80 or D200 will be easier. anyway body too big especially with grip a bit hard to balance the weight when using the 40mm...my right hand always gets tired after a while...or maybe its just me or i carry the cam the wrong way anyway whoever buys this lens will love it. ![]()

Yes the nikon D50 can do metering but it is still a manual focusing len. ANyway, i got the old one with the dome shape len hood. Quality and contrast of the len is really damn good. Remember, that is only around S$600/-. Foscuing is very easy to attain. For more information , can go to http://photo.net/
