Thread: Freelance Model Thoughts on Photography

Default Freelance Model Thoughts on Photography

I am a freelance model and writer, i like coming out with a theme or storyline, getting the right clothes and partnering a like minded freelance photographer for non-commercial shots that have meaning to the photos.

Personally i find that commercial photography has lost its intended purpose - to add a new dimension to the world we live in. There are some pretty good shots that capture that moment of nostalgia but most of them just show a pretty face and nothing more.

I would like to ask - do you feel limited as a commercial photographer? After all, you are fulfilling your client needs and not yours.

At the meantime here are my works

    Photos
    Writings

May I know what is the intended direction/purpose for the photos derived from the collaboration?

I think not. Commercial photography's intended purpose is very clear. Commercial. Dollars & cents

But there are exceptions. Some do have very unique perspectives with their commercial images.

Take a look at the portrait subforum here, and I think you will know if photographers have similar thinking as you.

    I totally agree with you.

Commercial photography has lost it's intent, simply because
    1) the photographer (or the bosses they work for) more often think about their bottom lines due to smaller client budgets and low client base more than the art.

    2) the client are ususally not open to ideas. they prefer something safer, less controversial and something they can show to friends where the reaction is "very nice" and not "how come you are sitting on the floor at the pavement".

It is a sad but true fact. This happens all aspect within the any creative field. be it photography, advertising or design/art related.

I think singaporeans just need to loosen up a little and stop going with the flow.. I guess it's the way the previous generations or even the government nurturing the "failure is not an option" mentality. Their level of risk everyone singaporeans take is to conservative.

Whoa.... Finally I see models on e same wave length. I have done quite alot of commerical photography in e past n often it is more about making e models or object look good so pple can sell them..... it is no longer about selling an idea or mood. I guess e industry is getting too financially driven at times. Well, that was why I left my last photographer job.... did not want to let my passion be corrupted and wanted it to have room to grow into something bigger......

Storylines r cool n all..... in fact, it allows one to look at things from a totally different perspective.

Will love to work with u ! Got me so excited on photography again! ha ha.

Averral, you certainly have artistic tendencies, so you'd need someone with equally artistic leanings to achieve the type of shots you want.

I wonder if you'll find anyone like that here.

On the other hand, maybe all you really need is someone who is technically competent, to press the shutter. You can come up with the themes, props, costumes, poses, etc. by yourself to express what you want.

I don't mind working with you although I am not into making angsty photos.

I agree with catchlights, commercial photography has a commercial purpose. It's not about adding "a new dimension to the world we live in". There's no issue to think about. Commercial photographers only worry about the next job and the next client.

It's precisely for this reason that there's "fine art" photography.

you to keep in mind that its easier to visually sell a product than it is with a concept. Commerical photography is all about sell sell sell.

Great shots, capturing the essence of mood I'm pretty new here and really haven't seen many great works in this forum. Too "young' to contribute either.Kudos to you and hope others will be inspired by you. The only thing I have learnt here is to gather enough posts to be promoted to senior and pen 2 sentences to put others down !!!

If money is taking out of the equation... the world will be a better place.

Maybe i should rename this topic to the discussion of fine photography vs commercial photography?

I am glad that i am not the only one who feels this way but due to the nature of the competitive environment we live in ... commercialisation cannot be avoided.

I have recieved a number of PMs on possible collaborations.
I intend to update with more works soon

But damn misguided. Anyone thinking that commercial photography is anything but for selling a product is misguided. It has nothing to do with creativity, unless it will increase sales.

Indeed, th=o think otherwise would be to not comprehend the meaning of the word COMMERCIAL.

Doesn't it defeat the purpose of photography for passion?

Please can you kindly clarify what you so strongly assert?

My understanding of "commercial", and in this case "commercial photography", is that the prime motivation of commercial transactions is profit. Is my understanding wrong? What is the accepted understanding of a commercial product? What is the meaning of COMMERCIAL, as asked by Mr garou12?

I did not at all imply that there is no creativity involved in commercial photography. But the prime objective of commercial photography is to maximise financial returns.

In what way is this misguided? And "damn misguided"?

none of them has anything to do with passion, commercial photography make no exception.
