It depends on whether you want to be serious about IR.

If you still want to take normal shots just get a screw on filter and a tripod. Using the screw on filter, you will need to set the CWB (instructions which can be found in the stickies) and start shooting. Usually exposure can range from 5-25 secs depending on the sunlight. For PP to achieve the blue sky check out the stickies as well. The thing about using a screw on filter, you will constantly be at the mercy of the weather. Sometimes you need to crank up your exposure and iso settings to even get a properly exposed picture but your image quality will suffer big time.

However if you are serious about IR, you can mod your camera (voiding the warranty of course)to be a full IR camera. The good thing about the mod is that you probably would not need a tripod to shoot and you can use different lenses to shoot too.

Hope this helps

one option will be that:

modify your D70 by just remove the ICF (or hot mirror), DO NOT add an IR filter inside, but only a protect glass only.then

when you want to take IR photo, put on an IR filter.
when you wnat to take normal photo, put on an CC1 filter!

for reference only

Try the basic first. That is, go to the sticky threads, learn how to set the custom white balance for your D70 (fortunately, it is pretty easy to do so with D70), and of course, you need to get an IR filter which fits into your lens (suggest you get the Hoya R72 with your kit lens first).

And don't forget one of the most important thing that you must have (at least before you decide to mod your cam): Tripod with Tripod head!

Do let us know if you need some help. Best is of course, wait for Francis to come back from his exam, join the outing he organizes (no lecture cost charge, no rental cost of IR filter if you don't have one ) and start from there...
