Hi people,
Recently I purchased a Canon Speedlite 580EX II and was thinking what would be the best rechargeable batteries to use with it. I might be using the flash in cold weather conditions (-25 degrees Celsius?) but I read that Lithium Ion batteries shouldn't be used with the flash. Is that true? Thanks. |

You can try Maha PowerEX 2700. I am using it, and it is pretty good and has good recycle time.
Can get from EastGear. |

But the Powerex cannot hold charge for very long. Once charged, must be used soon as after 2 - 3 weeks, charge will reduce.

Read that lithium batteries might overheat when subjected to high drainage (like in flash) and cause problems. But if u're not shooting continously, probably will be fine. Get the branded NiMH batteries and they should work great (offering better refresh rates vs alkalines and save over the long term). Eneloops and Reckyos are NiMH that can store charges much longer.

Yea I'll probably get some NiMH ones for normal use. But in cold conditions, wouldn't those batteries drain extremely fast compared to Li-ion ones?

I suppose the selection of batteries depends on the user. Cos for me, i do not use flash very often so i don't charge my batteries often, that's why i got the Eneloops. In addition, frequent recharging of batteries will shorten its life rapidly.

Strange... Mine hold their charge for mths on end, even when i leave them inside my flashes. I usually just take out my flash from the dry cabinet and it's good to go.

I am using Maha PowerEX 2700 and similarly, mine holds the charge for quite a while as well! Definitely more than few weeks

In that kind of conditions, Lithium batteries work best. But stay off Alkalines, they are as good as useless... Was in Montana some years back, a friend's camera using alkalines (fresh new ones straight out of package), died after taking like 5 shots ! My camera using lithium lasted about 100 shots instead of the typical 200. Oh ya ... it was -32 degrees C ! Most of the time in the range of -20 degrees C. If need be, keep the batteries or the flash as close to your body for as long as possible, and take out just before using. It'll save you some heart pain... |

But still doesn't match the Eneloops and ReCykos. Powerex IMO are great for on-the-spot use, other than that it won't really last.

Hmm... brought my POwerEx to a 3 week trip and shot about 200 shots. It was 2 weeks after that trip and it was still flashing away happily for about 50+ shots though...
