if you are using the f4, you will lose AF. if its the f2.8, you still can AF but from my experience, photoswill be soft.

AF issue can be solve with taping of pins but it will hunt.

So is it wiser to use TC 1.4X (although you don't get the extra reach) ?
Will that cause loss of AF ? I know your f-stop will be affected.

    Cheers

your 350D and all Canon non pro bodies (the 1 series) can AF if the maximum aperture of the Lens is f5.6. (it does not matter if you are shooting at f8 or smaller) Pro bodies can AF if the lens have a max aperature of f8.

1.4X TC will stop down your lens by 1 stop. eg from f2.8 to f4
2X TC will stop down your lens by 2 stops, eg from f2.8 to f5.6.

The 1.4X TC will be much better but I still find it soft on my 70-200 f2.8. For extra reach, get a prime EF400mm f5.6L which is the a very good lens. Price had drop a bit so new is around $16++ I think.

BTW, what do you intend to shoot with the reach?

Please be reminded that long/telephoto lens are not easy to handle, a good tripod is a must.

    thanks for the input guys

im on budget so i have to compromise 2 themes into 1 lens. dancesports and track field.
if i just get a prime for tnf i cant shoot dancesports. so... yeah. i thought of using 70-200 with a tc to help on track and w/o the tc to do dancesports mm.
