Thread: Africa trip

    Default Africa trip

always wanted to post a thread for information but always ended up dilly dally.
but after seeing starrynight's post , http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=319607 i'm quite determined to rough it out someday.

now's the time to do homework i guess.

experienced photogs who has been there, done that, please share information with me/us (since there a few people interested)

1)for trips like this, what would be the minimal number of days required?(got to plan leave)

2)is a big mama lens always required?what should be the minimum focal length to bring?

3)i heard there wont be electricity in certain parts of the stay.so exactly how many days without power and how many batts should we bring to be sufficient?

4)what kind of accomodation will we be looking at?tents?rovers?any 5 stars hotel?

5)is this kind of trip constantly ongoing to different places or you can dump your luggage in a hotel, and make the day trip and then back to hotel in evening?

6)any dangers?(sounds stupid but i'm more concerned about health issues and being robbed)

7)recommended vaccination?and how many days/weeks/months in advance that we have to take it before the trip?

8)cost per pax for entire trip?

9)any self drive 4WD with GPS system?

10)when's the best time/season to go?and how's the climate like?as hot and humid as sgp?

11)any personal contacts, lobangs?(if inconvenient, please pm me)

12)other than animals and birds, is there anything else in that country that's worth a visit?

that's all for now.really appreciate the answers.

if you're going on safari you're going to need a big ass lens as you won't be allowed to get close enough to the animals to disturb them...but some places they are used to the presence of humans so they wouldn't run off and hide if they see you. You're going to need a spotter and something cover yourself so you don't stick out like a sore thumb when you go looking for animals.

Are you specifically targetting Kenya? I just came back from Kenya and Tanzania. I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. What's your target? Safari?

You will not be able to self-drive with a GPS. Most of the trips and routes are planned and mapped, as the park rangers will stop you from going to areas where they're trying to stop poachers, etc. As a tourist you'll be limited to "fixed routes". However, these routes are usually very well planned to give you the best views. 3-5 days is good, and I recommend september.

Only when you're back in the cities. Other than that, it's baby wipes and talcum powder...

They'll probably give you a bowl of water for washing, but not a shower.

No, not SQ. You'll need to take Kenyan airways, or Ethiopian airways, or Emirates to Dubai, then Nairobi.

No, actually... Nairobi is fairly cool weather (jackets needed), it's about 800m ASL. If you drive out to the safari areas and get good sunshine, it's more of a dry heat. Not humid.

But VERY VERY VERY dusty and sandy.

You can arrange everything from SG. You'll be picked up at the airport.

There are many safari areas, though Kenya and Tanzania have the more popular ones.

Do NOT expect to enjoy a "squeky clean" time like in SG with hot baths, etc etc. Expect to rough it out in the wild. Be prepared to squat behind bushes for toilet business.

800m ASL = 800 meters above sea level. So it's cooler. Frequent rains and drizzles.

Make sure you bring a good camera bag, try to AVOID switching lenses in the wild and bring your blower.
