Default D80 IR Issue

Hi, guys. I'm quite new to the IR photography. Had a few pointers from some friends and tried the IR shot.

WB setting at the following. ISO800, Shutter 30sec, Aperture 5.6/6.3 photo to point to.

Had read up about the IR setting. So far, I set the WB to use a pic taken with the IR filter on. When I took the pic and try to pp, this came up. Can't adjust anymore or it'll look weird.

Can anyone help on this? Is it my WB setting still not right?

Hi There,

Are you using Auto WB or Preset WB?
It looks like your WB is wrong.

To set the White Balance correctly, try to wait for a sunny day and look for a green patch of grass which is under the sun.
Put on the IR filter.
Change to Manual mode. Try to set setting at ISO400, f5.6, 4secs.
Turn the WB setting to PRE.
Press and hold the WB button for 2 to 3 secs.
See the PRE start to flash, the Preset WB is ready to be set.
Point the lens to the patch of green grass and release shutter.
Check to see if the status shows "GOOD".
If status show as "NO GOOD", try again or adjust the manual setting to set the correct exposure.
Keep trying until it shows "GOOD".
Then WB is set, happy shooting.

When all else fails, try shooting in RAW.

So, it's better to do preset via the method above then using Preset to point to a IR photo in my system tat i shoot to preset WB?

Actually, this is wat i do for preset WB.]

Sunny day and look for a green patch of grass which is under the sun.
Put on the IR filter.
Focus and lock to manual mode.
Change to Manual mode. Setting at ISO800, f5.6, 20sec, timer mode.
Snap and save the photo taken via IR.
Change WB setting in PRE to use IR photo as preset.

Guess the above method don't work with D80 cos those friend who shared with me uses Canon and Sony.

Hi... I using D40 and was unable to set the CWB too. But I think its fine coz u can photoshop it. I tried doing for u, though I not v good at it but this is wat I get.

I tend to get a blue cast everytime I try coz I always try to make the sky blue so tis time I try not to fall into the "trap" again. Francis is this WB ok?

I still find it quite bluish. Maybe my WB setting not correct, will try again. Thanks for trying. My ideal is to get leaves white and overall balance color and not too blue or artifical.

I suspect D80 n D40 have very good IR filter in the system that it reduce the IR intake and hence, we have difficulty getting IR correctly.

When you are using Nikon DSLR to set the custom white balance (a.k.a. PRESET), you will have to ensure that it is ok. Sometimes (or many a time) it will come out with No Gd, which in this case, your custom white balance setting is not successful, hence, you will have to make another attempt till you get it right.

Thanks, had tried again today. Manage to get it right liao. Using set PRE via flashing is much more accurate than point it to a photo taken with IR on. So the measure setting is much better then use photo function.

Hi guys,

Recently, I'd reset my IR setting and run a test again. Tried to pp and still can't get the leaves white.

Can someone kindly help in this?
Don't know where went wrong?
Is it that the IR photo not bight enough?
Meaning exposure not high and duration not long?
Is it over expose or under expose?

Original.......................................... ............................After PP

Photo taken with IR WB, f/5.6, 25s, ISO800, EV 0.00.

Original.......................................... ............................After PP

Photo taken with IR WB, f/5.6, 30s, ISO800, EV 0.00.

Is the above closest that I can get with the leaves white like snow? Is the exposure too bright?

Btw, when I set the IR WB preset, i tried a few combination and the system says it's good to go. Setting of ISO800, f/5.6 with 5s, 10s, 15s, 20s, 25s, 30s. Seems the cam accepts everyone of it. So which one to keep? The above uses the one with 5s.
