    Default Lan Card

    Hi Fellow CS'ers;

I'm using an Intel Pro/Wireless 2011 LAN PC Card and am using it, trying to connect to a wireless hotspot, while in Esplanade, and while in Delifrance @ Harbourfront (WTC).

I'm facing this problem where after typing in th SSID, i get a connect and my laptop has a wireless network connection but after 3 secs or so, the connection drops.

Does this mean the Lan Card is faulty?

why everytime it is you who have problem with all these

from my experience....more like it is the access point at hot spot got problem

    kenna this yesterday only...

for a list of hot spot that have free wirless access...check out

http://www.bluengine.com and click on the left hand column.

btw...u got your card at $57?

sometimes even got connection, but seems that the DHCP server cannot assign me an IP address...so no choice must restart the laptop lor...

Strange thing is i don't get any signal or anything and when i check for any wireless APs, it simply hangs there and shows nothing.

I don't know if it's really my LAN card or not.

PS: Blue Engine, those free wireless APs listed there, what are their SSIDs?

    BECIMO or M1Surf

but best is just put "any" as SSID can already

unless the location got starhub, singtel, M1 access point, then need to specifiy lor

Try to help out here -

If you are using the Intel PRO/Wireless 2011 PC Card, chances are this is the version that is limited to a few channels only (IDA restrictions at the time of availability).

The newer version Intel PRO/Wireless 2011B does not have the restriction on wireless frequencies/channels.

Since the wireless hotspots are new, they would not have this channel restriction, thus while its broadcasting/listening on all channels, your PC Card is only able to pick up a few.

FYI, I was using the PRO/Wireless 2011B card previously, and I never came across this problem - was surfing at BK in Peninsular, Changi Airport, Novena Square.... no issue.

There is a reason why you only paid $57 for a $100+ product, and this is probably the reason.

Thanks for your input Darren. But is there anyway to go about solving this problem? Because if what you have posted rings true, then my Lan Card basically quite useless....

Is there any software available that i an use to check if my Lan Card is working fine or any software i can get to scan these wireless hotspots?

You might want to download the Intel PROSet Utility from Intel Support website ->> PRO/Wireless 2011 PC Card Drivers and FW Updates

There's a new firmware, and drivers for this card available. Perhaps flashing the new firmware will remove the channel limitation.

wouldnt scanning for APs be the same as hacking into other ppl's system?

    I'm not war-driving.

What i was trying (or in this case, my laptop trying) to do was to see what are the wireless networks available (eg. in BK @ Penin, Delifrance in WTC or inside the Esplanade) so i can log on with a iserid or password.

However, somehow, there seems to be no APs detected so right now i'm at a loss. Just updated the driver and hopefully, when i try again soon, it will be ok.

    yes...try update to firmware 2.5

    but a bit troublesome...

    first, go to here

dun download the BIOS 2.2 cos it is not latest, instead, scroll all the way down to download item 8. Web Release CD Image [2011_2011B_CD_3.0.1.EXE which contains firmware version 2.5

extract the exe file and update the firmware, however this new firmware only works with driver version 3.x and 6.x, so the old driver version 2.x that comes with your CD will not work, then download item 4. PRO Network Connection Software [INTEL_CD_6.2.EXE which is version 6.2 and install this latest set of driver.
