Thread: speaking your mind

  1. #1

    Default speaking your mind

    yet another possibly ranty thread

    question is, keeping in mind forum rules and proper decorum;

    a) if a is giving rubbish comments about something, at least it is rubbish from your viewpoint
    b) is there any wrong in stating your mind about this matter?

these days i see a lot of people hiding underneath the "it is my honest and humblest opinion" shield, and a lot of quack doctors who don't really know what they are talking about, at least they don't seem to at first sight.

yuh, some of you may find this arrogant, but when it comes to certain matters, at least on technicalities, i won't say i have the ultimate knowledge, but i would be confident enough to say that i know something about such things

so is it wrong to comment, really? certainly not good for forum "cohesiveness", but in the first place the people mentioned above had already broken the "unwritten contract" which would be provision of good, clear information which is accurate and reliable - and seeing how they did so in the first place, i question their reasons for doing so

i've gotten pm sometimes for the manner in which i make my posts - nowhere near people like deadpoet (in the past at least) or student (hurhur), perhaps i might be blunt, curt and sometimes brutal in speaking my mind

but do i really, really have to always put things in a nice way, when doing so would result in indirectness and a loss of conveyance of the general idea that i'm intending to express?

it's not that i care about the opinions of others, really, but i do see the originators of the pm as having good intentions

    so what are your thoughts?

I think sometime it is due to the way we put it in words. Some of us might be too sensitive and mis-read the writer's intention.

What are my thoughts ah..? Hmm. How one replies reflects 2 things

    a) the state of mind at the point of replying

    b) manners and character of the person

A brash and abrasive reply may not necessarily mean that the person is a total @$$... just well, emotionally disturbed at the point of time. But if it happens all the time, then it just shows the person lacks b).

Anyway, this is just typed text. It may never really convey the exact feeling/emotions that the originator intended.

My thought is that putting opinion forward is always easy. But getting other people to agree on your opinion is hard and even getting them to interpret your opinion the way you intend can be tricky. That's why persuasion is an art. Sometimes trying to put your opinions through too forcefully can be seem as unreasonable or even arrogance. It's very inefficient then, because all your efforts are wasted and your intend audience isn't even receptive of your opinions anymore.

Another problem that I see here on CS sometimes is simply just bad language, ie wrong spelling, lousy grammar etc etc. Sometimes people just take for granted that everyone can understand what they are typing or the casual tones are acceptable to everyone. I've seem some threads getting all hot simply because mis-reading.

Start a blog. It's your own space and you can say (almost!) whatever you want. If people are interested, they will come in to read. You don't have to worry about people agreeing with your opinion or not. And if you disagree with what people say within your blog, you can always kick 'em out!

Forum is like not your house. You're a member in a large community. Have to behave yourself. Cannot walk around naked, like you would in your own living room. (There are some things people just don't want to see, or care about).

i believe its all about perception. It is the general perception and not solely yours.
... what you thinks is correct, blunt and curt... but i question what others perceive your comment's as...

if the perception is arrogant, snobbish and outright disrecpectfull, why do the others has to put up with your comment? (even though that is their perception)

if you have the right to comment...then the others have the right to be treated in a way they feel respected.
(true enough you can question "why should i treat them with grace and respect" but why cant we treat each other in a friendly and respectful manner)

it is not wrong to comment but i would think it is more favorable to put the comment tone in a acceptable way to promote a constructive thread.

I am alot worst in person. I believe in telling it like it is then hide behind and do that heheheh...I am better online as I sometime have time to calm down as I type and then I go back and change parts of my bitching and tone it "nicer" abit heheheh... Some times I am more patience and take the time to answer or comment. At times, I do get effected by how some people would take your comment or advice and still not get it then you might fly off the deep end about it and at other times you just keep being nice hehe.. It's is only human lah. Just have to keep checking yourself to make sure you keep to being the good trooper that you are heheh...well most of the time.

Sometime we all have our moods and it does influence how we read some stuff sometime and if it caught us on a wrong day, we go off the tangent and at other times...well when you hangin here long enough and you start to pickup on the various vibes from folks here....their beliefs, motivations, agenda, personality, fears, abilities..etc. I tend to be nicer to the newer folks I am not sure about.

With others I have more or less access them for who I think they put up their mask to be in here, so we try to walk softly around some..avoid those we just would rather avoid and when it calls for..you groan abit, show your fang that you are not all defenceless and move on. But to let it worry me till it waste my time in real life...nah!...not worth my damn bit. If it gets too much....leave it or at least for a while. I do that all the time when I get so sick of CS that is just take a few months off. Personally...no CS wouldn't die to be honest...no food, good family, friends outside in real life, no job...you will die. I am not saying I am not here to make friend or not to make freind but even if I am not...it does not mean I should be a ranting mad bully here for no reason then just to get off on it. lah. That's just me lah heheh.... peace!
