    ...is this digital versus film

    or expensive versus cheap

in which case EQUIPMENT MATTERS LESS THAN THE PERSON

i give you best film best film slr you gimme tilted horizon, shitty exposure, also sian
i give you best lens best dslr, 8000 fps no distortion no nothing super duper high image quality, you give me bad composition, also sian

shoot more, think less about such things!

yes you need expensive equipment sometimes to make the shots you want.
This depends on what kind of photography you are doing and what size you are printing it up.

I can use a point and shoot with a hotshoe and I can use a medium format back, and both can create images that look similar at 800x600 pixels.

of course beyond that is a different story...

Simple equipment can take you a long way. Digital is useful for fast learning, but if you know what you're doing already then film's lovely.

Yes, then you can blame the equipment for not taking better pictures.

Other than getting a new camera body, switching to digital is about capital expenditure while film is on operational expenditure. Case in point: when you get your digital camera, although you dont spend anymore on film and processing costs, you will find that immediately you need a faster computer, more HDD space, more RAM. AFter that you hear that you need to calibrate your monitor so you buy one. Then you hear that its great to print at home, and you get a nice big A3 Epson printer.

ITs not necessarily cheaper. Just takes a lot of discipline!

    Glass is definitely important.

Body has always been secondary until you find that the body is limiting you - then change.

    What is your question?

    1. Film cheaper than digital?-- well, obviously depends on how much you shoot and print, and how much you value your time.

    2. Expensive equipment necessary?-- well, you need equipment that's good enough. Maybe not top of the end, but bottom of the heap equipment may have so many limitations it may make life quite hard for you.

Hmm. Maybe I should market a carbon-fibre model, specially for photographers!

    Back to the discussion:

Film v digital: It's time to move on. Film does have its merits, even till today. But digital is fast catching up in terms of quality and the speed of convenience really can't be beat. But somehow, I feel, IMHO, that the photographers that have been schooled in film are more well disciplined in their approach to picture taking, making more of an effort to make every shot count (one shot, one kill).

Cheap v expensive: It all depends on your definition of a "good" shot. Artistic vs technical standpoint. IMHO, a good photo would be a combination of both, so expensive eqpt would matter. But then again, some are very happy with a cheap Lomo.

A veteran shopping guru once told me that something is "expensive" only if it's not worth it.
