Don't block the light? Strech out your arm?

You should also determine if you're metering the light or the shade. Makes a difference depending on whether you use slides or negs.

whether you are standing in front, by the side of, diagonally sideways, under, over, behind or in front of the camera does not matter at all.
you just expose the metering white dome to the light that you would expect the object of your photo to be falling under too. metering that will give you the right reading. |

squad down raise hand to get metering, ask subj to hold meterin front of face and tell him/her 'just press this button when i say ok'. or you youself stand facing the light you want and meter accordingly?
