I assume that person is a him.
I think the best way is to talk to him, find out what's wrong, and give him suggestions to
help him solve whatever problems he have. Stand by him, cheer him up once in a while, but some stuff are better not to over-do. Afterall, taking action to be motivated/happy again is still dependent on him, not you or whoever around him.

Maybe its my mistake that I overemphasized the "depression" part. No, its just a combination of work stress and the daily pressures of living. Nothing SERIOUS. My friend is definitely not the types to go and commit suicide. Just going through a bad phase and I believe it will all get better.
This evening I'll go and check out the bookstores that you mentioned and hopefully I will find what I am looking for.
