Default Rules for candid photography

Was wandering what the legal, generally accepted / p.c. rules are for street photo's? e.g. say you see an interesting individual doing something like a cut-throat-razor shave and you rattle of a few shots, can they used without the person’s permission etc?.

Do you have to / should you approach the person first before taking the pic? – risking spoiling the result?

What are the norms
thks

I think if it is in a public place, there should not be a problem if the photos are not for commercial purpose and if the photos do not outrage the modesty of the person.

i've also always been confused abt this... coz as long as you put a subject's picture on a space that other people can see without their approval and they spot it they can sue you coz of legal rights right?

If I'm not wrong, candid shots are alright unless it's at a swimming pool / beach. Quite hard to explain yourself if you're caught taking pics there.

I think thread starter was asking about taking candid pics of people.

IIRC if the person is identifiable, you have to get a release.

If say its the person's back, or in a way which can't identify the person it should be OK.

Once I was told by the security I can't take pics at a stadium, when I was taking candid shots of my kids running... not some classified underground special training leh! Well, since it's a public place, I just keep my cam... without really understanding why!

there is little or no privacy law in singapore

non commercial use, should be OK

if you take a picture of girls exposing themselves in their own home
and send them to the media + police, the girls will be in trouble and not you

Oh issit? Stadium is a private property? Not public? Or maybe it's my interpretation of "private'... owned by Mr so-and-so.

it does have a gate
you need to pay money to go in

it belongs to someone else
and if that someone else says that it is private then it is private

if you are interested, you can call up and ask
i have no issues with them

the last time i just ask for permission to shoot and they said OK please change your identity for a pass to enter.

Ah.... noted... but I do capture some of the people in my shots too... though they are normally too small to be identified properly...

i think candid shots are ok if it is not to make money or degrading to the subject. I usually take candid of small kids. i would not hide and make my presents known. if i see parents that are not comfortable of me taking pic of their kids i would delete on the spot. Mostly the parents would be proud of their kids and i would normally offer to send them a soft copy of the pic as thanks. I dun use any of the pic to make money and i only take cute pic so should be fine. ( i hope lol )

Brings to mind, those kids at Bugis Junction... people just snap away at them... candid or not... heck, I shot quite a few there too.

And some of the kids aren't exactly wearing much when they are playing with water, so is tat a sensitive issue there?

I believe it's more of an issue of parental objections to others like how the photos are used.
