hi guys, i really like my kit lens which i've been using for just about every ocassion, from events to posed shoots to product stuff, just wondering though, is there another lens i could get that offers such wide focal range but is able to get sharper results? one thing i find about the kit lens is that if i'm needed to cover events, sometimes i manage to get those "capture the moment" shots, just that the image is slightly marred because it's not sharp enough...even when i set it at around f/7 -9. or does this have to do with the autofocusing capabilities of the d70?

it depends on the autofocus and shutter speed, the d70 is 6.1mp, and i dont think the camera out resolves the 18-70 lens. the 18-70 itself is very sharp already.
Its probably the focussing and the shutter speed (resulting in slight motion blur) probably

Could the pictures be "ruined" due to the small aperture, hence low shutter speeds?

Review - Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G
you can compare with the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC (not the new macro version) and the Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF]

thanks guys... don't think it's motion blur..then again i could be wrong, i'll have to relook some of my photos again... shot my events with a sb 600 on shutter priority, so the shutter speed should have been sufficient

well, one way to surely sharpen it up is to use a smaller aperture. shoot at f8 and you should get much sharper shots than wide open.

I started out shooting events with a D70s plus 18-70 kit lens too. The results weren't up to my liking, not sharp enough. Only when I moved on to a D80 could I see the real power of the 18-70 and it is really sharp (even with flash)!!!
My reasoning is that a higher MP camera can resolve better sharpness due to higher details available. If you're not sure, test your lens on a friend's D80 or D200 to check. I'm pretty sure the kit lens is pretty sharp on its own! If proven that it is the body at fault, not the lens, then its time to BBB!!! (kidding!)

d200 does not sharpen images as rigourously as d80.. so on poorer lenses.. the picture quality is quite apparent with respect to sharpness..
this's although both cams use the same CCD
