Hello,
I just got a 2nd hand Canon 24-70mm F2.8L, but i notice the zoom ring does not turn with uniform resistance through out the 24-70mm, it gets really stiff around the 24-40mm mark, and gets gradually easier to turn from 40mm on. The seller mentioned the lens is quite new, that's why the zoom ring behaves like that. Is this normal for the lens? Thanks in advance for any replies. if it's new, you could always send it to canon to get them to oil it for you.
but anyway, i dont remember any 24-70Ls i've used to have such problems thou.

Sometimes after zoom lens get a knock at certain zoom position, that will cause uneven turning feel. If its stiff throughout that could be manufacturing issue with the lens.
Maybe can check with Canon if the check for you. 15+ years ago, one of my early Canon USM had this problem, I sent it in to get it fixed, they had to change the whole barrel of the lens. Cost me quite a bit. |

whatever the marketing folks may say, the fact is that all zoom rings do attract dust over a period of time and become stiffer more in the range it is less used. So it is quite likely the same case with your lens. You should send it to canon to get it fixed.

alright thanks for the input, i'll have it checked just in case.
Another question about the filter size, i bought a 77mm filter to put on the 24-70mm, but it does not screw all the way in. I can only, with much difficulty, screw in only 1 mm till i can't turn it anymore. This is not right is it? |

Mine also behaves similarly. I got it 2nd hand, when it was about a year old, and it was barely used. Now after a year or so in use the zoom ring isn't so stiff around 24mm-40mm range, but there's still a discernable difference in the friction for that range and 40mm-70mm. Other than that, the lens works perfectly fine, so I think no need to worry so much over it. Probably a normal occurence for this lens.
Wonder if 24-105mm f4L IS lens owners do encounter such an issue too? |

No stiff zoom ring on my 24-105 (except for the zoom creep).
