Need Lens HELP!

Hi guys,

Am pondering on a 40D or a 5D. Aware of the differences, the main one being the 5D being full frame.

The camera is the simple purchase. What I really need advice on is the type of lens I want with the camera...

At this stage, my subject interest is product such as a watch on a desk, an Apple display in the middle of the room etc... AND human expression subjects....

Need advise on what kind of lens I should be looking at...

All help appreciated.

you sound like you need a macro lens.

100mm Macro lens, can shoot very sharp 1:1 magnification shots cum portrait shots as well with this lens.

Thanks guys. Is this lens expensive? The 100mm Macro Lens? And is this the name?

Canon EF 100mm USM f2.8 Macro lens cost around S$1K new.
There are third party lens available and they cost around 500-600 new.
Tamron SP 90mm f2.8 Macro
Tokina 100mm f2.8 Macro
Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro

100mm is about 810SGD from CP @ MS. Lens comes with international warranty.

Thanks for the advice on the EF 100mm USM f2.8 Macro lens...

I guess this is good for things like food pictures, which is in the general area of my interest. How about taking human subjects in a studio or outdoor shoot? Would this lens suffice? What if the subject is a car? I am thinking the EF 100mm USM f2.8 Macro lens would not cut it....

Advise please.

Actually this macro lens also makes a very sharp portrait lens as well. Some find it not soft enough, ie. the portrait turn to be too sharp.

If it is for studio shoot, 100mm may be too long. 50mm is best!

Sounds like you are into product shoot.... go for the tilt-shift series

TS-E45mm ~ for set-up of a table-full of items; or

TS-E90mm ~ for specific product.

Thank you for all your advice. I heard from a friend that the 100mm lens might require a BIG studio... so yes, the 50mm might be better... What is this 'tilt-shift' thing?

So how much would be the 50mm lens? More expensive than the 100mm?

I seriously think the 50f1.2 would be an over-kill ... you might want to consider starting off with something like the 50f1.4 at around 500++ (before gst) .... go check out MS Colour (Florence) or CP

... or if your budget is *really* tight like me, the 50f1.8 is actually quite usable ...

50mm f/1.8 with filter is appx. 130SGD while 100mm macro is appx. 810SGD

Not using anything at the moment. Looking at buying cause my friend from HK is coming over so I'm preparing my 'shopping' list.

So far, from the kind suggestions, it looks as if I will be going for the following:

1. Canon 40D
2. Sigma/Canon 100mm f/2.8
3. Canon 50mm f/1.8

Any comments?
