i am keen on this lens.
However, everyone is complaining about having bad copies out there. If i were to buy from a shop, which means i can test it out, is there other faults i have to look out with, other than softness at f/2.8? There are also critics about it can collect dust easily. Is it an overstatement? If i were to use this lens mainly during indoor and night times, are there any problems i will face? |

Hi,
I just got mine not too long ago, it is a wonderful lense i'm sure you will enjoy too, you may want to know that the hood are sold seperately, since you will be paying so much, go a little further to get a good QUALITY filter too. Pls choose a sharp copy, if not you may have to send back for calibration after sale. Enjoy

Sometimes it is not a question of calibration. And Canon has to resort to this:

Thumbs up for those whom PM me with regards to my prevoius threads, I closed it for the sake of preventing more harm done here than to seek positive advices/solutions to a common problem. Happy snapping

no dust problem.
but just 24hrs ago, my 17-55 IS + 400D ..... hanged up on me while shooting rom !!! hang in the most critical "contract signing" time. lucky i got spare 24-105 + another 400D to save me. i not sure if is my 400D or 17-55 IS giving the problem. but ultimately, 17-55 IS is a very great lens, with a not too great lens body.

Hi, i m also interested in this lens. May i know what's the latest price for this lens? From the Canon lens price thread that i checked, it's $1480, but when i ask Cathay or MS Color, they quoted $1.6-1.7K.
Is it because of the GST increase? |

Hi all, i just got myself the 17-55 too today. Tested at the shop. All focussing point was spot on. Even at different apertures. All seems fine. What are the chances that it could be soft or has any problem? How do i test it properly? Thank you.

Before I took this one, i wasn't happy with the first one I tried. Focussing was not spot on. Somehting seems not right. But the one I bought i'm happy with it. Compare it with the 17-40 which I had, I'm more at home with this lens. BUt i still would like to know how to tell if mine's not a lemon. ![]() Annyone? |

Well...I think I will be loving this lens more and more everyday. Went out shooting test pictures at all apertures. All I can say is that its nothing like I've ever seen before

Well it is not built like a L lense quality, possibly still the hot favorite choice for 1.6x crop body, good enough for me to last a couple of years, no FF dream till i have save enough....haha....by then 5D mkII may be a standard items amoung us.
happy snapping

Guess the built is the only flaw....and the occasional bad copy. Other than that, I've no regret
letting go my 17-40L for this baby ![]() |

Be careful what you say about senior members. I know very few who actually worship their equipment.
