Default Green Cast

Hi there, I've been playing with my new 100ds and was taking pic of my son, some of the pic have got a green cast. I wonder if anyone encounter this problem? Its taken against a bright background, he stands infront of a window. I'm pretty sure its not the UV filter, cos after i remove it, the cast is still there.

Can anyone suggest any reason for having the cast? Also how to avoid in future? Thanks in advance

Post a picture. The usual candidates - incorrect WB setting, and related to this mixed lighting situations, ghost/internal reflections from a filter and lens flare.

Auto white balance can't always get it right. But you can correct in Photoshop.

night86mare, he got the new K100D Super.

I guess you are taking photos of your son indoor. For indoor WB is abit tricky, better taking the photos in RAW, and tweak the WB when you load the RAW files Sometimes for indoor I do prefer abit warm (and the actual scene) color...

I've also noticed my K100D auto white balance is not very accurate indoors. My old Panasonic FZ20 and Ricoh R4 point and shoot cameras were more accurate. Have to manually set the WB quite often on my K100D. Is it just mine or does anyone else have this problem?

pentax dslrs have that problem, so best to shoot in raw when shooting indoors, or might want to just shoot in tungsten i guess, find it easier to correct that way

most reviews mention this, hehehe

The WB on the K10D really takes a lot of getting use to ......... Took me quite a while to know how the camera reacts under different light conditions,

I do not shoot RAW and seldom do PP ............. wish they come up with a firmware to correct this

K10D's WB can be quite accurate if there aren't multiple lightsource of different colour temperature (eg. tungsten + fluorescent). When there are multiple light source types, shoot RAW so you can tweak the WB later on.

Most likely a WB issue. As others said, with multiple light sources (usually fluorescent + tungsten) in the same frame, the K100DS's auto WB goes a bit nuts. I have started shooting in RAW under these conditions, because the JPEG WB settings wouldnt give accurate color.

Also I get some halos (actually, flare I think) from the UV filter (Hoya) sometimes even in bright sunlight or artificial light.

Question for the experts here: Is it better to remove the UV filter while shooting at night, especially with artificial light sources?

I almost always remove my filter for night shots and put on a lens hood. Cheap single or uncoated filters are OK for use during the day but show up their limitations with point light sources at night. Using high end multicoated (read expensive) filters like B+W can reduce the incidence of flare and internal reflections but removing a filter is cheaper and works better. Maybe the only filter I would use at night are those cross screen star filters.

The B+W MRC 010 UV is good but the cheaper Kenko Pro 1 Digital is just as good and much, much easier on the wallet.

Is the any improvement if I change from Kenko Pro 1 to B+W MRC?
I am presently using Kenko without any issue.
Sorry to the side track.

Optically the Kenko Pro1 DMC Protector is probably even better than the B+W MRC ones And I found they are also easier to clean as well (than those Hoya HMC filters), of course can't beat B+W in this regard. Now I prefer the Kenko Pro1 digital over the B+W Pity they don't have 49mm filter size for the Pro1 DMC line

I edited for you, now it should show up fine

For flickr hosting, you'll be careful with the photo links. It might not work if not linked properly ...

Okay, did you mean the blue color part on his chest below his neck? That looks like a some light reflection to me.

I see the picture... It's not a WB issue...
Looks like a reflection of something.
What's behind you? Another window?
It looks like light casted from another window behind you.
But I have no idea why it would be green....

How come theres reflection? I got a window behind me but its covered with a curtain. and no direct sunlight from that window. The funny thing is that some other pic that i test out does not have this problem.

OT abit, can advise me where to meter so that the background will not be overexposed? And still able to see my son's face clearly? (i mean w/o flash)

There is no way to meter the shot so you get a non-overexposed background and a correctly exposed face (with any existing camera).

You basically need to have a dimmer background.
