Default Quality Control Issue on lenses

Hi,

Had read countless threads on the softness of a good class lenses like the 17-55 f/2.8 or even the L class lenses.

Can anyone enlighten newbie like me on this issue, because i just want to know if it's due to QC problem at Canon end or does these problems happens in Nikon, or any other manufacturer.

I can accept my lense sharpness at wide open but never had a chance to compare with other of the similar makes, after reading thru these problems, it's kind of scary to throw in $1k ++ for a good lens and later found out not sharp as expected.

You may laugh at me on how i bought my 17-55 f/2.8, i just mount the lens on my 40D body, take afew snap and paid the money. Now if i were to invest in another good lens of other ranges, i will really be very careful with the QC of the lens.

Can anyone share their experience here, specifically on Canon makes and pls don't discuss 3rd party lense.

I feel that if we pay premium to get original canon lenses, they must at least uphold the quality....and not leaving it to chances like those 3rd party makers. And sending back to CSC for recalibration after sales is also not acceptable too...my 2 cents worth.

I hope those repair engineers from CSC are using some special jig/equipments or instruments to do calibration that is repeatable, and not dependable on their individual skill set, as it varies from person to persons based on their years of accumulated experiences.

Cheers

That's life. Technology has progressed so fast that we are often too carried away.

Ooops... or maybe it's because you have never shot anything more challenging than architecture.

yup...if u doubt in the first place, y would u choose canon?

i always believe in machine fault and human fault..nothing is prefect in this world.
I believe Leica has the same problem also?well maybe..

If is QC fault the lens is not sharp...Canon will calibrate for u FOC...
is the technology and quality of the lenses that are being put in one lens that make the cost of the lens. well, there are some third party lens that are very good also...
take for example the tamron 90mm f2.8 marco...without fail...u can see people saying that is a sharp lens. the only thing bad on the lens is slow, noisy and it extend.

Nothing is prefect....
u will know if u been to a QC department...

You sounded awfully like someone. You got something challenging to show?

Hi Guys,

Cool it, i'm not starting a war here, all i asked is that if the tolerance of the sharpness of the lenses is so great when it leaves the production line, it's gonna create more complain from consumers.

If Canon can tighten those tolerances, most of us will be happily grab any of their lenses of the shelf without much to worry.

Infact i came over from Nikon recently, still very happy with my present setup. I'm only trying to find out more about Canon's product/policies based on good faith, nothing evil behind.

The senarios is like 2 friends went to buy same makes of car, catalogue rate it at 170 hp, one got 172hp the other got 151hp, whereas both paid exactly the same price for the car, why should the latter gets less hp or short-changed?

Cheers

The you've got to see who tested the cars and verified that one car is indeed 20+bhp short. 20+bhp means nothing if you are stuck on CTE but means hell a lot at Sepang. So does that 20bhp means anything to your friends? Or is he just unhappy because he know he has 20bhp short? Would he even know the difference if nobody told him?

Sorry, got carried away with cars.

My point being(and as an analogy), who tested the car with what method of testing? How did the tester verify the difference? Lastly, if the owner wasn't told of it, would he have picked up the difference?

Sorry, slightly OT Question. If I buy a canon lens with Warranty in Hong Kong. And that i find it unreasonably soft.

Am I able to bring it back to Canon Singapore to recalibrate it? Thanks

It's a peaceful night....
