Agree -- 18-70mm is a lot cheaper and gives better IQ (that is my personal opinion -- many will disagree). Having said that, i would not mind taking the 18-200VR if i can only bring along ONE lens.

I've use both lens, imho 18-70mm gives better sharpness and pic quality. 18-200mm is just for convenience sake.

Its interesting to hear that many ppl think the 18-70mm gives better IQ compared to 18-200mm... So I guess it outperforms 18-135mm in terms of IQ as well?

I'm using a 18-70mm with my D40, and I got to say it's a pretty sharp lens. Of course I hope it comes with VR... whether it required for merely a 70mm max is one thing... it's better to have it than not! (I was trying out a Canon 17-85 IS the other day, phew, it's pretty good!)
I've tried the 18-200mm too, you just have to give full marks for adaptability. Agree that it's a good lens for tours and walkabouts, but the downside is it's heavier and the lens protrudes too easily. Well, my head goes for 18-70 but my heart goes for 18-200! ![]()

18-70 definitely sharper than 18-200 and 18-135. In general, the greater the zoom ratio, the quality degrades also (Unless u r talking abt those better built lenses with great amt of zoom like 200-400mm f2.8)

I used both the 18-135 and 18-70. On the contrary, I find the 18-135 sharper than the 18-70, especially at the edges. Thom Hogen seems to find the 18-135 sharp. The resolution charts of the 18-135 on Photozone.de also put the resolution of the 18-135 above the 18-70 and 18-200.
As for 18-70 vs 18-200VR, I would not hesitate to get the 18-200VR for the extra reach and VR capability. BC |

I personally find 18-200VR better. The 18-70 is sharper than 18-200VR near wide end open but both step down look about the same. There is a web site that did test on 18-70, 18-135 and 18-200VR. 18-200VR only lose out at 18mm but the rest about the same or better. For a Lens with 11x ratio that is very good.

I personally only print a max size of A4 (no money for A3 printer) and 4R prints, cant see the big diff. |

I dun own a prosumer printer so I cant see the diff in prints but I do see some prints from those printers using a normal lens and a good lens and there is def a diff not only in color tones but also in terms of sharpness. |

Between the 2 lenses, the sharpness is pretty close. Therefore, it may be quite difficult to tell them apart.
Sharpness does matter. Texture of objects, and stuff like eyelashes in portraits, are tell-tale signs of a sharp lens and a not-so-sharp lens. BC |

I shoot with both lens indoor without flash and the VR definitly sharper with slow speed and as for colour 18-70 is slightly better.
Will try during day shoot. |
