Be more careful w.r.t. your backgrounds for the first two. Go back and keep trying for the last one. Again, consider the background - are you isolating or just snapping?

Thanks Tankm.

Thanks too Azure. I'm not too keen on background. What matters to me is to capture the moment. I can isolate if I want to, I can snap on my 2X TC to accomplish that.

As for the last one I intended for some movements. I can always up the ISO and shutter speed if I wanna freeze motion. And yep, I'm just snapping .

For #1 & 2, i feel that the brighter patches in the BG cause distraction to the subject, esp the blown highlights in #2 just below the subject.

#3: A symmetrical framing would be better. But then again it would be just another close up shot.

#4: I would consider this a failed attempt at capturing the "moment", the subject is OOF and the BG is messy.

In my opinion, the BG plays a part to help compliment / provide contrast for the subject hence i feel that it's an important part in the making of a picture. No point have a nice subject and have a messy BG or distraction in the BG to steal / divert attention away from the subject.

Thanks guys .

@Taurean, thanks too for the input.

I guess it comes down to preference, some will like it, some will not. I have been shooting by-the-book for the past couple of years, this is my first time trying to "change" my shooting style.

Any good photo to show as an example for #4? Thanks.

Whatever style, don't you think that you should have the dragonfly's eyes sharp/in focus? What's the point of getting a sharp sharp leaf, but your subject is blurr??

hehe, ok my mistake. i shot that handheld, prefocused on the leaf. shot after chasing the dfly out of the leaf and while attempting to go back. of course, focus will go off while chasing off the dfly with one hand. btw, i don't intend to get a perfect focus shot for this, as i'm experimenting.

thanks for commenting.

Thanks BobCheong for the link. I'll browse later as the images are blocked from office network.

BTW, I mentioned I was experimenting on changing styles, deviating from my normal shooting. I would like to share one of my in-flight shots that's decent enough and shot by-the-book.

I don't know about by the book or others - I'm just a newbie. But personally I prefer the one that has a bit blurred although I would prefer to have at least a clear dragonfly eye with slightly blurred wings and tail etc. Sort of like the effect of opening your shutter for some time and setting the flash to go off when the shutter is about to close - what do you call that, rear curtain? To me the blurry part creates the impression of motion. Just my opinion.

Yes, that's right Luenny .. rear curtain sync in slow sync mode.

Hmm ... I'll just try again when I find time although I personally like the 4th pic. Maybe because it's something different for me .

Thanks guys for taking time out to comment. All inputs are noted.
