Default is there an angled viewfinder ?

i am trying to find 1 for D70s because when i shoot objects like the moon i have to go into an awkward position to see the viewfinder to get composure and focus right as the camera is positioned near vertical and the tripod is too low.

so often my neck or back gives way before my patience does

anyway PPCP sells this seagull 1 for 99.90 which is expensive i feel, so i am looking for something that's cheaper and hopefully have a magnification.

thanks

if you see the system chart on the D70s Brochure
you will see on page 8 that the Nikon Angle Finder DR-6 can be used on your D70s

it has the best fit to your camera, it can also be used on many other DSLRs as well

It cost almost 3x the seagull but if you look carefully, you will realise that the slip on attachment for Nikon viewfinder is offset from the optical axis. 3rd party attachments are usually optically centered so the optical axis will be off and you won't get a good view. Better to just get the Nikon one.

To add on... the similar DR-5 is meant for camera with a circular eyepiece. The DR-6 is meant for rectangular eyepiece. So be careful when getting it, dun get the wrong one.

Doesn't matter because you can get an eyepiece adapter to fit the DR5 onto the rectangular type.

Not expensive and you can use DR-5 with DSLRs having the circular eyepiece. You can't fit DR-6 on those.

Digging up this old thread because I am looking for an ange finder to use with D200, mainly for moon photography through a telescope.

Seems like there are 3 main options:

1. Nikon DR-5 with DK-22 adapter - Can use on D1x and older SLRs with 19mm eyepiece thread. Most expensive (US$200 + $4 for the DK-22)

2. Nikon DR-6 - Can on SLRs with rectangular eyepiece only, but cheaper than option 1. US$160??

3. 3rd Party angle finder - in this case, the popular one seems to be Seagull 1-2.5x. Can use with rectangle eyepeice cameras only, cheapest option (US$53 including shipping from ebay).

Since cost is high proprity for me, I am looking closely at option 3.

Has anyone used the Seagull finder on a D200?

Can share your experience and give feedback? Is there an offset (mis-alignment) of the optical axis as pointed out by Isisaxon?

Also, other questions about the Seagull:
- Is the magnification continuously adjustable between 1x and 2.5x or are there only 2 settings at 1x and 2.5x?
- Is the image flipped or inverted?
- Does the diopter adjustment shift when changing magnification?
- If the fit between the finder and the camera through the adapter tight enough?
- How's the optical quality? Is it good enough to really help with focusing when "zoomed" to 2.5x or is the distortions/light loss bad enough to defeat the whole purpose of magnifying the viewfinder in the first place?

Thanks!

Honestly... I believe the Canon angle finder I used before should be better than Seagull, yet there's the optical axis misalignment, I think it's deliberate on Nikon's part, most other makes are centered. Contrast was poor and it was hard to focus... Especially when you're trying to do astro... Even the moon was difficult.

I've not used Seagull before, so my believe that Canon is supposed to be better may be wrong. I think the best bet would still be to go for the DR-6 if budget and quality is a concern. Maybe can try to loan one to try first? I would like to know the quality also.

Another option is to use the star diagonal and use a 1.25" to T, so the camera replaces the standard eyepiece. However, use it only as a last resort because the D200 is quite heavy. I would prefer to use a D70s or even a D40 or D40X because it is really light.

How was the optical quality? Is it easy to manual focus with?

The Canon Angle Finder C is a good option - had a chance to briefly use it on a friends cam - quality is good (yes, works nicely with NIkon cameras)

Have to pull out the Seagull - have the previous model (heard that they just released a newer version) - used it mainly with the D70 and have not tried it on the D200 as yet, I'll pull it out later if I can and let you know how it works with the D200's larger viewfinder view.

OP is quite ok, not that friendly, but still ok for that price.

You have to pre set the diopter to you eye sight. I just pre set it once and use a black tape to secure it.

1.) The image is what you see in the camera view finder, not flipped or inverted.
2.) Yes, the diopter adjustment changes with the magnification.
3.) The fit to my D80 tight enough
4.) I find the OP is good and bright enough, but when set to 2.5X, you can only see the centre of the actual view.

Hope the above help

I found the Canon one almost impossible to manual focus when I use it with my telescope! 7 out of 10 are OOF!! Even with lenses, it's ok if I use AF but I just could not focus properly with it, even after adjusting the diopter.

Can you guys try MF with the Canon and the Seagull and let us know the verdict? I would like to get the Seagull one too if it's ok. Nikon one works very well but is too expensive for me to throw around..

canon angle find c 1.25x - 2.5x
nikon right angle viewfinder dr-6 1x - 2x
seagull angle finder gen 3 1x - 2.5x

iirc. when i was looking for an angle finder, i crossed off the canon from my list because of the 1.25x. to me, not being able to see the full frame would make composition very challenging. at the "zoom" end, the 2.5x (canon, seagull) would have a slight advantage over the 2x (nikon), as it would help with fine-tunning while focusing manually.
