I've read that its best not to shoot B&W photos using the camera's monochrome mode(how true is it?). I don't have Adobe Photoshop, so is it possible to convert colour photos in Canon's DPP software? Thanks

In case you want to get a colour picture from your shot, you can use what you shot, and if you want a B&W shot, you convert it. If you already shot the photo in B&W to begin with, it has no colour info, and you won't be able to get a colour photo from that shot. |

Doing a proper B&W conversion in photoshop (which is not availabe to you) is the 'proper' method. |

Reducing Saturation to zero in DPP can convert jpg to monochrome. If you shoot in RAW, you can just select Monochrome under Picture Styles in DPP and even if you selected the Monochrome Picture Style in camera, you can still get back colour shots when you switch out of Monochrome in DPP (if you shoot raw).
