Hi all, I pretty new to photography and the world of dSLRs.
Just want to ask about the limitation of lenses that are available for the Nikon D40/D40x series... Are they only limited to AF-S lenses? The other question I have: Can I know what types of lenses are compatible with the D70/D80 series? Thanks a lot! |

D40/40X can only autofocus with AF-S lens, but it non AF-S lens can also be attached to the mount and be used...but in full manual mode (manual focusing, manual metering)
D70/80 series can work with lens decades back (eg, AI or AI-S lenses). No worries about lens compatibility! So it can use almost all lenses, except that it can't meter those manual lenses. But unlike the D40/40x, the D70/80 series can autofocus with non AF-S lens.

The D40and D40X are designed for AF-S and AF-I CPU lenses equiped with an autofocus motor. However most F-mount Nikkor lenses can be used with manual focus.

Oh, my bad... what i was trying to say was that metering will be done by the camera, but you have to adjust the shutter speed and aperture manually to get the desired exposure which the camera doesn't do for you.
Hope I phrased it correctly...

Not true... it's still able to be controlled by the camera in the P mode and Auto mode, the only difference with AF or AF-D lenses is that you need to manually focus.

thanks for the help guys... i was looking for a simple telephoto lens for long dist outdoor shooting.
I was under the impression that all nikon lenses would be compatible. What would be a cheap and good lens equivalent to a 70-300 AF-G that I can use? Thanks |

Dun think so... it's a AI-S lens rite, so only the D200 and above cams can do so...

I see... so there's still another catergory in the lenses between AI-S and AF.

The 85mm PC is able to perform 3D matrix metering, that's why with a "D" suffix. However, P, A & S does not work with the 85mm PC, only in M mode. BC Last edited by Scaglietti; 1st October 2007 at 06:30 PM. |
